Vita Coco Spiked with Captain Morgan was just released. It joins a crowded field of canned cocktails including brands made by Malibu and Bacardi. The Captain Morgan name should make it easy to gain shelf space. Captain Morgan parent Diageo has enjoyed success creating canned cocktails for several of their brands including Crown Royal, Smirnoff, Ciroc, Ketel One, and Tanqueray. As the name would suggest it is made with Vita Coco the best selling coconut water brand, and Captain Morgan the worlds number one selling spiced rum. Vita Coco Spiked is sold in individual flavor 12 ounce 4 packs. Three flavors are available, Pina Colada, Strawberry Daiquiri, and Lime Mojito. Each 12 ounce slim can weigh is with 5% alcohol and 145 calories. By comparison one can of Bacardi Rum Punch tips the scale with 5.9% alcohol and 273 calories, Malibu Pina Colada 7% alcohol and 335 calories. Read more

Captain Morgan Cherry Vanilla was just released. This is not the worlds first cherry flavored rum, I’ve reviewed six already, but it is the Captains first. While not as famous and peanut butter and jelly, cherry and vanilla have several very successful marriages. These include Cherry Vanilla ice cream, Cherry Vanilla Coke, Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper, Cherry Vanilla Burts Bee lip balm, and more recently Skatter Brain Dark Cherry Vanilla Whiskey. Captain Morgan Cherry Vanilla is made from premium Caribbean rum, spice, natural flavors, and certified color. The rum base is made from sugarcane molasses. Captain Morgan Sliced Apple was just released. It is one of 13 Captain Morgan varieties in the current Captain Morgan lineup. It should not be confused with Captain Morgan Apple Smash, their over sweet 60 proof flavored rum designed for shooting. Captain Morgan is one of several spirit brands owned by Diageo including Smirnoff, Crown Royal, Baileys Irish Cream, and Ketel One. If anyone knows how to extend a product line it’s Diageo. Three of those brands Smirnoff, Crown Royal, and Baileys Irish Cream already have an apple flavored version of their original. The Captain Morgan Spiced Rum base is made from sugarcane molasses. Captain Morgan Orange Vanilla Twist was just released. It is a Limited Edison Summer variety. As I watch the snow gently fall outside my window nearly one month before the start of spring, I only wish we were closer to summer. A quick glance of the Captain’s website shows this is one of 12 varieties of Captain Morgan. The rum base is made from a blend of rums distilled in St Croix from Caribbean sugar cane molasses in a continuous still. The rum is oak barrel aged for 1 year. Captain Morgan Watermelon Smash was just released. This is the fourth cannon ball shaped variety of rum in the Captain Morgan stable of rum. The others include Cannon Blast, Jack-O-Blast, and Loconut. These flavors weighs in at 70, 60, and 40 proof. Captain Morgan Watermelon Smash hits the scale at 50 proof. All are designed to be enjoyed as a chilled shot or mixed in a tasty cocktail. Watermelon Smash is made with rum distilled in St Croix. Natural flavors and certified colors are blended with the rum upon its arrival in the US. How much watermelon flavor does the Captain pack into this rum? I could smell the watermelon from the shelf the bottle sat on. Maybe because the bottles label is watermelon scented, or maybe because there is just too much watermelon flavor to contain in one bottle. Read more

Captain Morgan Loconut was just released. It is made with a blend of real coconut liqueur, Captain Morgan rum, Caribbean spices, and natural flavors. This is the second follow up to their original citrus, and pepper, spiced rum flavored, Captain Morgan Cannon Blast, that was launched August 2015. Their pumpkin spiced rum flavored Jack-O-Blast was introduced September 2016. All three of these flavors are designed primarily to be consumed as a shot, but, while Cannon Blast and Jack-O-Blast weigh in at 70 and 60 proof, Loconut hits the scale at 40 proof. Read more
