Review: Skyy Vodka 2021

Skyy Vodka was launched 1992.  In 2021 they updated their bottle and recipe.  When Skyy was released in 1992 the American distilled vodka competition was Smirnoff and a handful of discount brands.  Brand creator Maurice Kanbar developed a new distillation process that removed most of the congeners.  Congeners are the natural by-product of alcohol production blamed for bitter taste and hangovers.  The vodka was quadruple distilled and triple filtered through California limestone.  Water filtered through reverse osmosis was blended to reduce to proof.  Skyy enlisted the help of chemists, professional bartenders and a water sommelier when the decision was made to update the brand.  It appears Skyy Vodka 2021 is made from the same wheat base, is quadruple distilled and triple filtered through reverse osmosis.  Instead of using water filtered through reverse osmosis, water enriched by Pacific minerals sourced from the San Francisco Bay area is used to reduce to proof. Review: Skyy Infusions Cold Brew Coffee Vodka

Skyy Infusions Cold Brew Coffee Vodka was just released.  While I have reviewed several espresso flavored vodka’s, this is my first experience with a cold brew coffee vodka.  The only other brand I know of is Beak and Skiff 1911 Cold Brew Coffee Vodka.  This is produced in Lafayette New York, and distribution is limited, so we haven’t been able to get our hands on a bottle to review.  For those not familiar with cold brew coffee, it differs from Iced Coffee.  Cold Brew is coffee brewed with room temperature or cold water for 12-24 hours.  Skyy Cold Brew starts with a vodka base made from Midwestern grown wheat.  It is quadruple column distilled and triple filtered through California limestone.  Water filtered through reverse osmosis is blended to reduce to proof.  Real Arabica coffee beans and natural flavors are infused with the vodka before bottling at 70 proof. Review: Skyy Infusions Sun Ripened Watermelon Vodka

Skyy Infusions Sun Ripened Watermelon Vodka will soon be released.  I was lucky enough to get my hands on a bottle a little early.  This is not the first watermelon flavored vodka Skyy has produced.  Three years ago Skyy Vodka released a 60 proof line of flavored vodka under the Skyy Barcraft product line.  One of those three flavors was Watermelon Fresca.  The Barcraft line is no longer produced.  Sun Ripened Watermelon is the one of 15 flavors in the current Skyy Infusions line up.  Watermelon continues to be a popular flavor ingredient for both beer and spirits.  This will be my 13th Watermelon flavored vodka review.  The vodka base is made from Midwestern grown wheat quadruple distilled in Pekin Illinois.  Once in San Jose the spirit is triple filtered through California limestone and blended with water filtered through reverse osmosis.  Natural watermelon flavors are infused before bottling at 70 proof. Review: Skyy Infusions California Apricot Vodka

Skyy Infusions California Apricot Vodka was released in March.  It is finally arriving on store shelves in the Midwest.  With 94% of the apricots grown in the USA coming from California, it’s no surprise the apricots used to produce this vodka are grown there.  This is Skyy’s 18th flavored vodka in their Infusions product line.  Several years ago I was asked to predict the next three new flavors of vodka.  The three I selected were Apricot, Cantaloupe, and Banana Cream Pie.  This was at the height of the popularity of Pinnacle Whipped Vodka.  Since then Grey Goose introduced Le Melon, their Cavaillon melon flavored vodka.  In February 2016 Belvedere launched Peach Nectar Vodka, a vodka infused with American Peaches and Polish Apricots.  This was followed by Western Son Apricot and Seagrams Apricot Vodka.  I’m still waiting on that Banana Cream Pie flavored vodka, and I’m a little surprised no one has released a Celery flavored vodka.  Skyy Apricot starts with a vodka base made from Midwestern grown wheat that is quadruple distilled in Pekin Illinois.  Upon arriving in San Jose California the vodka is blended with water filtered through reverse osmosis.  The vodka is then triple filtered through California limestone.  The vodka is infused with California grown apricot and other natural flavors before bottling at 70 proof.  Read more »

Review: Skyy Infusions Bartlett Pear Vodka

skyy-infusions-bartlett-pear-image-copySkyy Infusions Bartlett Pear Vodka was just released.  It is the 17th flavored vodka in their Infusions line of vodka.  The Bartlett Pear’s origin dates back to the 1760’s in England and was first named a Williams Pear.  Seeds from this pear were first brought to the US around 1800.  They were planted in Massachusetts on an estate later acquired by Enoch Bartlett.  Hence the Bartlett name.  Today nearly 50% of the pears harvested in the US are Bartlett Pears.  This is actually down from the 80% market share they enjoyed 30 years ago.  Bartlett Pears are eaten fresh and they are used for canning, puree and pear juice.  Pear is not a common vodka flavor and two of the pear flavored vodkas currently in my bar, one made by Smirnoff, and the other by Hangar One, are no longer available.  Skyy Infusions Bartlett Pear is made from a vodka base of Midwestern grown wheat that is quadruple distilled in Pekin Illinois.  Upon arriving in San Jose California the vodka is blended with water filtered through reverse osmosis and then filtered through California Limestone.  The vodka is then infused with Bartlett Pear and other natural flavors before bottling at 70 proof.    Read more »

Review: Skyy Infusions Coastal Cranberry Vodka

Skyy Infusions Coastal Cranberry - CopySkyy Infusions Coastal Cranberry Vodka was just introduced.  They now offer 16 varieties in their Infusion line of flavored vodka.  While cranberry is a very popular juice to mix with vodka, there have been relatively few cranberry flavored vodkas introduced.  One that was once produced Stoli Cranberi is no longer, and two that are still available are combined with other fruits.  Pinnacle Cranapple is blended with apple and Absolut Cherry combines cranberry with cherry and plum.  Only someone reading the Absolut Cherry label would know cranberry was one of the ingredients.  Coastal Cranberry is made with Midwestern grown wheat that is quadruple distilled, blended with water filtered through reverse osmosis, and triple filtered through California Limestone.  Natural cranberry flavor is then infused.
