Review: George Dickel X Leopold Bros, Collaboration Rye Whiskey

George Dickel X Leopold Bros. Collaboration Rye Whiskey was recently released.  It is a collaboration of two of the most creative and dynamic Master Distillers in the industry today.  Todd Leopold and Nicole Austin of Cascade Hollow Distilling.  Here is what we know about this whiskey.  It is made with George Dickel never before released traditional column still rye.  Previous Dickel rye releases have been sourced from MGP of Indiana.  In the US rye whiskey is by law made from a mash of at least 51% rye, and that is what several ryes including Knob Creek Rye, Rittenhouse, and Jim Beam Rye are made from.  This George Dickel Rye is made from a 95% rye 5% malt mash bill.  It is blended with Leopold Bros. Three Chamber Rye.  For over a hundred years American rye whiskey was commonly produced in a three chamber still to extract not only distillate but also oils and aromas hidden in the grain.  Production of this style ended after World War II.  Leopold Bros. painstakingly re-engineered a three chamber still from old manuscripts.  It was built by Vendome Copper Brass Works.  Their rye is crafted from 80% Abruzzi rye grown on rye fields 25 mile north of the distillery and 20% malt, and not just any malt.  Leopold floor malts their own Colorado grown grains on-site at their distillery.  The spirit is barrel aged for 4 years. Review: Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye

Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye has received a Double Gold medal at the 2020 and 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, won 1st Place Best Canadian Whisky at the 2021 International Whisky Competition, and was named World Whiskey of the Year 2021 by one of the biggest names in the Whiskey World, the author of the 1 million copy selling Whiskey Bible, Jim Murray.  Most spirits can claim to be award winners but its the quality of the competition and the names behind the awards given to Alberta Premium Cask Strength Whiskey that’s most impressive.  Not bad for a whiskey that was originally released in 2020.  Alberta Premium is crafted by Alberta Distillers from 100% Canadian prairie rye grown by local farmers and refreshing glacier fed Rocky Mountain spring water.  Alberta Distillers was founded in 1946 and Alberta Premium debuted in 1958.  They are one of the first and very few distillers to create a true 100% rye whiskey.  They are so well respected they supply the 100% rye used in Masterson’s, Jefferson’s, and Whistle Pig’s 10 Year old ryes.  Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye is aged for a minimum 5 years in new charred oak and non chill filtered.  It is bottled at 127-134 proof.  The bottle we are reviewing today was bottled at 127.4 proof. Review: Porters Small Batch Rye

Porters Small Batch Rye was launched May 2019 with the release of 1000 cases.  Rye whiskey was the most popular form of whiskey in America until Prohibition in 1919.  Today Rye Whiskey is one of the fastest growing spirits in the US.  Porters is made from a 95/5 mash bill of rye and barley.  It is distilled and aged for one year in Indiana at the MGP distillery.  The 111 proof whiskey is transported to Ogden’s Own Distillery in Ogden Utah where it is further aged in heavy charred new oak barrels for over 3 years.   The whiskey is blended down to 90 proof with water sourced from a hidden spring only accessible by foot.  This pure spring water is brought down 5 gallons at a time.
