Review: Don Q Pina Rum

Don Q Pina Rum was released August 2017.  It is just making its way to my market.  This may be the result of Hurricane Maria shutting down production for several weeks at Destileria Serralles.  Pina is one of five flavored rums produced under the Don Q label.  The others include Coco, Limon, Mojito, and Pasion.  The Serralles Family has been distilling rum in Puerto Rico since 1865 using a copper pot still imported from France.  Don Q Pina Rum  is made with the finest molasses, fresh volcanic mountain water from the Rio Inabon, and a unique strain of yeast kept alive and in use for over 75 years.  After fermentation the spirit is distilled five times and aged 12-18 months in American White Oak Barrels.  The rum is charcoal filtered.  Natural pineapple juice is infused with the rum base before bottling at 60 proof.     Read more »

Review: Don Q Pasion Rum

Don Q Passion - CopyDon Q Pasion rum is one of four rum flavors they craft in Puerto Rico.  The others include Coco, Mojito, and Limon.  They start with crushed sugar cane that is boiled in order to extract the crystallized sugar.  What remains is molasses that retains about 50% of the sugar from the cane juice.  Fresh water sourced from the Rio Inabon, which runs through Puerto Rico’s volcanic mountain region is added to the molasses along with a unique strain of yeast.  After fermentation it is distilled five times and then aged 1-1/2 years in American white oak barrels.  It is then charcoal filtered before natural passion fruit flavors are infused.  The finish product is bottled on site at the distillery at 60 proof. Review: Don Q Coco Rum

Don q coco - CopyDon Q Coco rum is one of four flavored rums produced in Puerto Rico by the Serralles family where they have been distilling rum since 1865.  The Don Q brand is named for Don Quixote the literary character from the families favorite novel.  After a decades long absence from the US market Don Q was re-launched in 2006.  Don Q Coco starts with sugarcane which is crushed and boiled to create molasses.  The molasses is combined with water from the Rio Inabon and a proprietary yeast which starts the fermentation process.  The rum is then distilled to remove unwanted elements before a minimum one year of aging in American White Oak Barrels.  The rum is then charcoal filtered before only natural ingredients including rich coconut are infused before bottling at 21% alcohol on site at the distillery.
