Review: Captain Morgan Orange Vanilla Twist

Captain Morgan Orange Vanilla Twist was just released.  It is a Limited Edison Summer variety.  As I watch the snow gently fall outside my window nearly one month before the start of spring, I only wish we were closer to summer.  A quick glance of the Captain’s website shows this is one of 12 varieties of Captain Morgan.  The rum base is made from a blend of rums distilled in St Croix from Caribbean sugar cane molasses in a continuous still.  The rum is oak barrel aged for 1 year.  Spice and other natural flavors are blended before bottling at 60 proof. Review: Bayou Satsuma Rum

Bayou Satsuma Rum - Copy (2)Bayou Satsuma Rum was introduced July 2014.  It is one of four rums crafted at the Louisiana Spirits Company in Lacassine Louisiana.  Each is made using 100% natural unrefined Louisiana cane sugar and molasses.  After being distilled in a copper pot still, triple filtered fresh water is blended to reduce to proof.  Satsuma juice from oranges grown in Louisiana are blended with the rum before bottling at 60 proof.  The Satsuma orange is native to China and is a variety of the Mandarin orange.  It was first planted in Louisiana by Jesuits in the 18th century.  In October 2015 it was announced the Stoli Group would become the exclusive distributor of Bayou rum in the US.  Before that Bayou Rum was only distributed in 7 states. Review: Bacardi O Rum

Bacardi O rum - CopyBacardi O rum was introduced in 2002.  It is one of 15 flavored rums they create in Puerto Rico.  It is made with molasses and a single strain of yeast, Le Levadura Bacardi that are fermented for 30 hours in closed fermentation tanks.  The fermented molasses is divided with some column still and some beer still distilled.  Each is aged separately in lightly charred American white oak barrels.  Once mature the rums are blended and filtered through a mix of charcoal made from tropical woods and coconut shells.  It is infused with the essence of Mandarin oranges from Sicily, Valencia oranges from Florida, and Dancy tangerines from Brazil, Israel, and Florida. Review: Cruzan Orange Rum

Cruzan orange - CopyCruzan Orange rum is one of the 13 flavored rums created by Cruzan using a five column distillation process, all natural flavors, pure well water, and cane sugar used to create the sweet molasses base.  Their history dates back to 1760 when a sugar mill was located at the current site.  The Nelthropp family soon built the distillery at this site on St. Croix.  Today their eighth generation is working there.  Cruzan is the fastest growing rum in the US and it is part of Beam Global which was just acquired by Suntory. Malibu orange float rum - CopyMalibu Orange Float rum was introduced in February 2014.  It is one of 14 flavored rums created by Malibu.  It is made with molasses from the finest sugarcane crops and distilled three times in Barbados.  Natural coconut flavored liqueur and orange cream flavors are then blended before bottling at 21% alcohol. Review: Tippy Cow Orange Rum Cream

Tippy cow orange rum creamTippy Cow Orange Rum Cream is one of four Caribbean Rum Creams that were introduced by Midwest Custom Bottling in February 2014.  This is the group behind the wildly successful Rum Chata.  It is made in Pewaukee Wisconsin with fresh Wisconsin Dairy Cream, Caribbean Rum, natural flavors and artificial colors, and packaged in a quart milk style glass bottle at 14% alcohol.  In case the name doesn’t give the flavor away, the orange creamsicle pictured on the label is a clue.
