Review: Big Spring Spirits Coconut Rum

Big Spring Spirits Coconut Rum was released December 2014, along with a Spiced Rum, and Seven Governors Gin.  Big Spring Spirits is named for Bellefonte’s Big Spring.  This spring was awarded the Best Tasting Water in the State by the Pennsylvania Rural Water Association.  The distillery also received a Gold rating from LEED, considered the leading benchmark in green buildings.  Big Springs was conceived by friends, and Penn State alumni, Paula Cipar and Kevin Lloyd, and is located in the old Bellefonte Match Factory.  This factory opened in 1900 and was one of the leading producers of wooden matches.  The factory closed in 1947 due to competition from book matches and cigarette lighters.  Big Spring Spirits Coconut Rum is made from 100% Caribbean Fancy Molasses, and is distilled in a pot still. Water sourced from the before mentioned Big Spring is blended to reduce to proof.  Natural flavor is added before bottling at 70 proof. Read more »

Review: Ciroc Summer Colada Vodka

Ciroc Summer Colada Vodka is a limited edition vodka available in very limited quantities at liquor stores and top hotspots nationwide.  It joins a flavored vodka lineup that includes Amaretto, Apple, Coconut, Mango, Peach, Pineapple, and Red Berry.  The vodka base for each of these flavors comes from a blend of Ugni Blanc and Mauzac Blanc grapes.  The juice is made into a wine.  The wine is distilled four times in stainless column stills by Master Distiller Jean-Sebastien Robicquet at his 500 year old family owned Maison Villevert Distillery.  A fifth distillation follows in a traditional custom copper pot still at Distillerie de Chevanceaux in the South of France.  Coconut, Pineapple, and other natural flavors are infused before bottling at 70 proof in an all white bottle.  The Ciroc brand was first launched in 2003, but it wasn’t until Diageo partnered with Sean Combs in 2007 that the brand blew up.  Combs is responsible for managing all Ciroc lifestyle branding and marketing initiatives. Review: Svedka Colada Vodka

Svedka Colada - CopySvedka Colada Vodka was introduced July 2012.  It was their seventh flavor at the time, and it was bottled at 75 proof.  Svedka now produces 12 flavors and their Colada flavor is bottled at 70 proof.  This review is for their 75 proof Colada.  I have yet to find their 70 proof Colada.  Each 750ml bottle is made with four pounds of Swedish winter wheat.  A continuous distillation process is used before the vodka is run through high performance purification columns five separate times to remove impurities.  Ice cold water from Swedish springs is then blended with the vodka before natural coconut, mango, and pineapple flavor is infused.  With this ingredient list, and the name on the bottle there is no doubt a Pina Colada is the inspiration for this vodka, but since it is made with vodka instead or rum a more appropriate name would be Chi-Chi. Review: Pravda Coconut Vodka

Pravda Coconut vodka - CopyPravda Coconut vodka is one of eight vodka flavors Pravda creates in Poland with their original vodka as a base.  It is made in small batches with pristine ice cold Carpathian mountain spring water and local late harvest sweet rye.  They use a five step continuous distillation process that includes two extra high column stills.  This is followed by an extra distillation in a copper still to soften the taste.  It is then filtered with charcoal made from French Birchwood.  A cold stabilization process where the vodka passes through ultra technical filters under high pressure is then used.  Natural flavors are infused before bottling at 75 proof.
