Review: Canerock Rum

Canerock Rum is produced by Maison Ferrand, the makers of the Plantation Brand of rum.  It is made from rum sourced from two iconic Jamaican distilleries, Long Pond and Clarendon.  Long Pond has been distilling rum since 1753.  Clarendon since 1755.  The sourced rum includes a blend of pot still and column still rum aged up to 3 years in charred American oak barrels from Clarendon, and traditional pot still heavy rums aged 5 to 10 years from Long Pond.  The rum is blended and individually infused with Caribbean coconut, Dried Madagascar vanilla pods, and Jamaican wild ginger.  Once complete the rum spends a few months in Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks before bottling at 80 proof. Review: Beach Road Coconut Rum

Beach Road Coconut Rum is crafted at Paradise North Distillery in Green Bay Wisconsin.  While Green Bay Wisconsin is not exactly where you might picture a beach, much less a place where coconut rum is produced, Green Bay Wisconsin does have a beach on Lake Michigan, and the distillery is located on Bay Beach Road.  Tom Feld opened The Paradise North Distillery in 2021.  They currently produce several rums, vodka, and whiskey.  Beach Road Coconut Rum is made from their Beach Road Silver rum base distilled from domestically sourced black strap molasses, and raw can sugar.  Natural coconut flavor, and pure cane sugar are blended before bottling at 70 proof. Review: Saison Pale Rum

Saison Pale Rum is one of six rums in the Saison Rum portfolio that are distilled in the Caribbean and shipped to France where the rum is aged in barrels and blended at Distillerie Tessendier and Fil.  This distillery is best know for crafting Cognac Park.  For four generations the Tessendier men and women have grown grapes and created cognac.  Saison Pale Rum is made from distillates from 3 distinct terroirs in the Caribbean Islands of Barbados. Trinidad, and Jamaica.  The chosen unaged rums are selected from both the distillation of molasses in pot stills combined with sugarcane distillation in column stills.  The rums are shipped to France and blended by Cognac Master Jerome Tessendier.  The blend rests in mature French oak barrels on the banks of the Charente River for 3 months.  The rum is gradually reduced to 40% with no sugar added. Review: Captain Morgan Cherry Vanilla

Captain Morgan Cherry Vanilla was just released.  This is not the worlds first cherry flavored rum, I’ve reviewed six already, but it is the Captains first.  While not as famous and peanut butter and jelly, cherry and vanilla have several very successful marriages.  These include Cherry Vanilla ice cream, Cherry Vanilla Coke, Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper, Cherry Vanilla Burts Bee lip balm, and more recently Skatter Brain Dark Cherry Vanilla Whiskey.  Captain Morgan Cherry Vanilla is made from premium Caribbean rum, spice, natural flavors, and certified color.  The rum base is made from sugarcane molasses.  It is distilled in St. Croix on a continuous still and aged in oak barrels for 1 year. Review: Mount Gay Eclipse Rum

Mount Gay Eclipse Rum is named for the 1910 total solar eclipse from Halley’s Comet that was visible over Barbados.  Mount Gay distillery is the oldest continuous operating rum distillery, dating back to 1703.  Master Blender Trudiann Branker hand selects a blend of rums distilled in traditional copper pot and column stills and matured for up to 2 years in charred used American whiskey barrels.  The rum is crafted from sugar cane molasses in Barbados, the birth place of rum.  The spirit is fermented for 72 hours with a proprietary house yeast and double distilled in a traditional copper pot and column still.  Pure well water sourced from a 300 foot well is blended to reduce to proof.  The rum is filtered through natural coral.  Read more »

Review: Montauk Rum Runners Coconut Rum

Montauk Rum Runners Coconut Rum is one of three spirits produced by Montauk Rum Runners.  The other three include Montauk Honey Flavored Whiskey, and Montauk Citrus Flavored Gin.  All three are distilled and bottled at Long Island Spirits in Baiting Hollow New York.  The rum base is distilled from molasses.  Natural flavors are blended before bottling at 60 proof.  Montauk Coconut is a rum we were looking for three years ago when we were putting together our Coconut Rum Roundup, and again when we were working on a Top Ten Coconut Rum list last year.  We never finished either as I lost my appendix 3/4 of the way through the Coconut Rum Roundup, and my smell and taste for 6 weeks due to Covid half way through our Top Ten Coconut Rum list last October.  I promise we will finally complete a Coconut Rum Roundup early next year.  While it appears Montauk Rum rum is no longer produced it is still available at New York Craft Spirits.
