Review: Western Son High Plains Raspberry Vodka

Western Son High Plains Raspberry vodka was just released.  It joins a flavored vodka lineup that includes Peach, Cucumber, Lime, Blueberry, Watermelon, Prickly Pear, and Grapefruit.  They also produce Western Son Original unflavored vodka.  The Western Son brand was launched in 2011.  The distillery is located in the former Old Panty Factory in Pilot Point Texas.  Each flavor starts with their original unflavored vodka made from a mash of Midwest and Texas Yellow corn.  Once the corn is milled water sourced from a local aquifer further filtered through reverse osmosis is added to the mash.  After fermenting, the vodka is distilled ten times.  First in a copper pot still.  The spirit is then distilled in a 20 foot column still containing 13 perforated copper plates.  The vodka is quadruple filtered before natural flavors are blended with the original vodka base.  Read more »

Review: Western Son Gulf Coast Lime Vodka

Western Son Gulf Coast Lime Vodka was released June 2018.  This is one of eight vodka varieties produced at the Western Son Distillery in Pilot Point Texas.  They also produce 2 gins, and a new line of canned cocktails.  Western Son Lime is made from yellow corn.  It is distilled ten times through a 20 foot column still and then quadruple filtered.  Water filtered through reverse osmosis is blended with the spirit to reduce to proof.  Natural lime essence and natural flavors are blended with the vodka base before bottling at 60 proof.  Read more »

Review: Western Son Far East Yuzu Vodka

Western Son Far East Yuzu Vodka is the newest of eight flavored vodkas made at the Western Son Distillery.  The Yuzu fruit is a Japanese citrus fruit that originated in China.  It grows to the size of a tangerine.  The flavor has been compared to a grapefruit with Mandarin Orange overtones.  Yuzu is a popular ingredient in Japanese beer and has also been used to produce a beer for New Belgium Brewery, and Charleston Beer Works.  Western Son Far East Yuzu Vodka is made from yellow corn.  It is distilled ten times through a 20 foot column still and filtered four times.  Water filtered through reverse osmosis is blended to reduce to proof.  Natural Yuzu essence and natural flavors are blended with the original vodka base before bottling at 60 proof. Review: Western Son Big Stripe Watermelon Vodka

Western Son Big Stripe Watermelon Vodka is one of eight flavored vodkas created at the Western Son Distillery in a former panty factory in Pilot Point Texas.  Believe it or not there are over 1200 cultivars of watermelon.  Big Stripe is a member of the Crimson Sweet Watermelon family and is commonly grown in Texas.  It has a light green rind and darker green stripes.  The flesh is red and sweet with large black seeds.  The Western Son vodka base is made from yellow corn, and is distilled ten times through a 20 foot column still and filtered four times.  Water filtered through reverse osmosis is blended to reduce to proof.  Natural watermelon essence and natural flavors are blended with the original vodka base before bottling at 60 proof. Review: Western Son Vodka

Western Son Vodka was first produced in Carrollton Texas at a distillery built in 2011.  Growth has exceeded that distilleries capability and Western Son is now made at their new distillery that once housed a former panty factory in Pilot Point Texas.  They also create six flavored vodka’s and three whiskeys.  Like their better known Texas neighbors Tito’s, and Deep Eddy, Western Son Vodka is made from yellow corn.  It is distilled ten times through a 20 foot column still and quadruple filtered.  Water filtered through reverse osmosis is blended with the vodka to reduce to 80 proof. Review: Western Son South Plains Cucumber Vodka

Western Son South Plains Cucumber Vodka is one of seven handcrafted flavor infused vodkas made at the Western Son Distillery in Pilot Point Texas.  This is my 12th cucumber flavored vodka review, and I know of several more I have not yet reviewed.  The cucumber originates from India, but now grows on most continents.  China currently produces 76% of the worlds total.  A cucumber with the peel is 95% water.  South Plains Cucumber is made from their Texas Vodka base made from yellow corn and water filtered through reverse osmosis.  The vodka is distilled ten times through a 20 foot column still and quadruple filtered.  Natural cucumber essence is blended with the original vodka base before bottling at 60 proof. Western Son South Texas Prickly Pear Vodka is one of seven handcrafted flavor infused vodka’s made at the Western Son Distillery.  This distillery is housed in a former panty factory in Pilot Point Texas.  The other flavors include Hill Country Peach, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Piney Woods Blueberry, South Plains Cucumber, Hill Country Apricot, and Big Stripe Watermelon.  South Texas Prickly Pear is made from their Texas vodka base made from yellow corn and water filtered through reverse osmosis.  The vodka is distilled ten times through a 20 foot column still and quadruple filtered.  Natural Prickly Pear essence is blended with the original vodka base before bottling at 60 proof.  A Prickly Pear is a cactus species native only to the Americas. Western Son Hill Country Apricot Vodka is one of six handcrafted flavor infused vodka’s made at a former panty factory in Pilot Point Texas.  The other flavors include Hill Country Peach, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Piney Woods Blueberry, South Texas Prickly Pear, and South Plains Cucumber.  They also produce Red River Whiskey, Bravos Gin and Blue Lacy Texas Whiskey.  Hill Country Apricot starts with their 10X Distilled Texas Vodka base that is made from yellow corn and water filtered through reverse osmosis.  The vodka is distilled 10 times through a 20 foot column still and quadruple filtered.  Natural apricot essence from apricots grown in the Hill Country of Texas are blended with the original vodka base before bottling at 60 proof. western-son-piney-woods-blueberry-vodkaWestern Son Piney Woods Blueberry Vodka was released July 2014.  It is one of six handcrafted flavor infused vodka flavors they produce in Pilot Point Texas.  While you may not have heard of this brand, they have sold nearly 200,000 bottles of vodka in a short period of time.  Western Son Blueberry starts with a vodka base made from American yellow corn and water filtered through reverse osmosis.  After 10 distillations through a 20 foot column still, the vodka is quadruple filtered.  Natural Blueberry essence from blueberry grown in the Piney Woods region of Texas are blended with the original vodka base before bottling at 60 proof. Review: Western Son Hill Country Peach Vodka

western-son-hill-country-peach-vodka-copyWestern Son Hill Country Peach Vodka is one of six flavored vodkas they craft in Pilot Point Texas.  The other flavors include Ruby Red Grapefruit, Piney Woods Blueberry, South Texas Prickly Pear, South Plains Cucumber, and Apricot.  40% of the peaches grown in the state of Texas are grown in the Hill Country.  This 25 county region of central and southern Texas stretches from the Northern suburbs of San Antonio ending southwest of Austin.  The vodka base is made from American corn and water filtered through reverse osmosis.  After 10 distillations through a 20 foot column still, the vodka is quadruple filtered.  Natural peach essence are blended with the original vodka base before bottling at 60 proof.
