Review: Captain Morgan Sliced Apple

Captain Morgan Sliced Apple was just released.  It is one of 13 Captain Morgan varieties in the current Captain Morgan lineup.  It should not be confused with Captain Morgan Apple Smash, their over sweet 60 proof flavored rum designed for shooting.  Captain Morgan is one of several spirit brands owned by Diageo including Smirnoff, Crown Royal, Baileys Irish Cream, and Ketel One.  If anyone knows how to extend a product line it’s Diageo.  Three of those brands Smirnoff, Crown Royal, and Baileys Irish Cream already have an apple flavored version of their original.  The Captain Morgan Spiced Rum base is made from sugarcane molasses.  It is distilled in St. Croix in a continuous still and is aged for 1 year in oak barrels.  A proprietary blend of Caribbean spice is added before bottling at 70 proof.  Captain Morgan Slice apple is made with premium rum, natural apple flavor, spice and natural flavors. Review: Sailor Jerry Savage Apple

Sailor Jerry Savage Apple is the first line extension in 19 years of the very popular Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum.  It is made from the Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum base with real apple flavors added.  Unlike the original Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum which is bottled at 92 proof, Savage Apple weighs in at a more user friendly 75 proof.  Apple is the second most popular flavored whiskey only trailing cinnamon in bottles sold.  Crown Royal Regal Apple is the second most popular flavored whiskey only trailing Fireball, so it is not a surprise that Sailor Jerry selected apple as their first flavor variant.  Savage Jerry is currently only available in Illinois, California, Florida, and Texas, but National distribution will follow. Review: Captain Morgan Apple Smash

Captain Morgan Apple Smash was just released.  This is their fifth cannon ball shaped bottle of flavored rum designed to be served chilled in a shot glass.  The other flavors include Cannon Blast, Jack-O’Blast, Watermelon Smash, and LoCoconut.  Each is made with Caribbean rum that is shipped to the US where natural flavors and certified colors are blended before bottling at 60 proof.   Read more »

Review: Bacardi Big Apple Rum

Bacardi Big Apple Rum - CopyBacardi Big Apple rum was introduced in 2005.  It is one or 15 flavored rums they create in Puerto Rico.  It is made with molasses and a single strain of yeast, Le Levadura Bacardi that undergoes a 30 hour fermentation in closed fermentation tanks.  After fermentation the fermented molasses is divided with some column still and some beer still distilled.  Each is aged separately in lightly charred American white oak barrels.  Once mature the rums are blended and filtered through a mix of charcoal made from tropical woods and coconut shells.  It is infused with Fuji, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith apples before it is bottled at 70 proof.
