Review: Truly Red White & Tru

by Jeff Ellingson

Truly Red White & Tru was just released.  This is one of three seasonal 4 flavor 12 can variety packs Truly plans for 2023.  Truly Wonderworld was the first.  Truly Red White and Tru is a summer seasonal release.  April may seem a little early for a summer release but Pumpkin Beer usually starts showing up on store shelves by the end of July.  The name and patriotic packaging along with the popsicle/slush themed flavors scream Summer Release.  Also new is the “Lightly Flavored” designation.  Truly Lemonade, Margarita, and Punch mix packs with carry the “Bolder Flavor” tag.  Each 12 ounce slim can weighs in with 100 calories and 5% alcohol.  The alcohol base is made from fermented sugar, with real fruit juice from concentrate and natural flavors.  The fruit juice from concentrate is less than 2% but the absence of Stevia is welcome news to me.

Truly Cherry Pop: Made with dark cherry juice from concentrate.  It pours to a bright pink color.  The aroma leads with Maraschino cherry.  The Maraschino cherry entry builds to a juicy cherry peak.  It fades with cherry popsicle and finishes with tart and sour cherry leaving grapefruit peel taste.

Grade: B+

Truly Blue Razz: Made with Raspberry and Blueberry juice from concentrate.  It pours to a bright bubbly purple color.  The aroma leads with blue-raspberry bubble gum.  If blueberry and raspberry entry brings back memories of my first bright blue BlueRazz slush.  The juicy fade offers berry fruit juice notes leaving carbon seltzer aftertaste.

Grade: B+

Truly Lemon Ice:  Made with Lemon Juice from concentrate and sea salt.  The aroma leads with fresh lemonade.  The sweet lemonade entry builds to a lemon cream peak.  It fades with sea salt and finishes with sour lemon, foamy soda, saline, and bittersweet carbon seltzer taste.

Grade: B-

Truly Peach Burst: Made with peach juice from concentrate.  The aroma leads with fresh peach.  The fresh peach entry builds to a juicy tart peach peak.  It fades with unripe peach and finishes with sour peach skin and carbon seltzer taste.

Grade: B+

The Bottom Line:  I would describe the overall flavor as more than “lightly flavored” but not over sweetened.  While there is some fruit juice flavor there is significant carbon seltzer after taste.
