Review: Vita Coco Spiked with Captain Morgan

by Jeff Ellingson

Vita Coco Spiked with Captain Morgan was just released.  It joins a crowded field of canned cocktails including brands made by Malibu and Bacardi.  The Captain Morgan name should make it easy to gain shelf space.  Captain Morgan parent Diageo has enjoyed success creating canned cocktails for several of their brands including Crown Royal, Smirnoff, Ciroc, Ketel One, and Tanqueray.  As the name would suggest it is made with Vita Coco the best selling coconut water brand, and Captain Morgan the worlds number one selling spiced rum.  Vita Coco Spiked is sold in individual flavor 12 ounce 4 packs.  Three flavors are available, Pina Colada, Strawberry Daiquiri, and Lime Mojito.  Each 12 ounce slim can weigh is with 5% alcohol and 145 calories.  By comparison one can of Bacardi Rum Punch tips the scale with 5.9% alcohol and 273 calories, Malibu Pina Colada 7% alcohol and 335 calories.

Vita Coco Spiked with Captain Morgan Pina Colada:  The aroma leads with sliced pineapple, creamy coconut and spiced rum.  The sweet pineapple juice entry is joined by creamy coconut building to a juicy pina colada peak.  It fades with juicy pineapple, spiced rum and creamy coconut, leaving tangy pineapple taste.

Grade: A-

Vita Coco Spiked with Captain Morgan Strawberry Daiquiri:  The aroma leads with floral strawberry, lime juice and spiced rum.  The sweet strawberry jam entry is joined by coconut water and lime juice building to a juicy strawberry daiquiri peak.  It fades with spiced rum and finishes with tart strawberry, coconut water, spiced rum and lime juice.

Grade: B+

Vita Coco Spiked with Captain Morgan Lime Mojito:  The aroma leads with lime and spearmint gum.  The sweet lime and coconut water entry builds to a minty mojito peak.  It fades with spearmint gum and lime juice and finishes with coconut water and rum mojito taste.

Grade: B+

The Bottom Line:  The Vita Coco coconut water cuts the sweetness of these cocktails but like the Captain Morgan rum the two headliners play more of a supporting role to the lead flavors used to create these three cocktails.
