Review: Denizen Aged White Rum

Denizen Aged White Rum - CopyDenizen Aged White Rum was introduced in the US in 2010.  It is one of two rums under the Denizen label.  The other is Denizen Merchant Reserve, a rum blended with pot still rum from Jamaica and Rhum Grand Arome from Martinique.  Denizen Aged White rum starts with rum column distilled at the Angostura Distillery in Trinidad.  The rum is aged up to five years in American oak barrels previously used to age bourbon and charcoal filtered.  The rum is blended in Amsterdam with 15 types of Jamaican pot distilled rums.  Rum blending has taken place in the Netherlands since the early 1700’s. Review: Caliche Rum

caliche rum - CopyCaliche rum was introduced in 2012.  It was created by Rande Gerber and Master Distiller Roberto Serralles in Puerto Rico at the Serralles family distillery where they also make Don Q rum.  The Caliche name comes from a type of limestone found near the distillery, that is used to cement other materials together.  Caliche is crafted with the finest Caribbean molasses.  It is distilled five times in a column still and it is aged in American White oak barrels.  Caliche is a blend of four different rums aged 3, 4, and 5 years with a small portion of Solera rum added.  It is then filtered with a special charcoal blend to remove color build up during aging. Review: Sammys Beach Bar Rum

Sammy beach bar rum - CopySammys Beach Bar Rum was launched in Hawaii in 2011 and nationally 2012.  It is a collaboration between Sammy Hagar and Mark Nigbur, the master distiller at the Haliimaile Distillery in Maui Hawaii.  This is the distillery that creates Pau Maui vodka.  It is crafted with Hawaiian grown sugar cane, not molasses like most rums use.  The canes are harvested and then gently pressed near the distillery.  The pressing extracts the first press sugar cane juice.  The juice is fermented for five days.  The master distiller hand distills the mash once in small batches using handmade pot stills.  Sammy does not provide any information as to how long their rum is aged.  Read more »

Review: Banks Five Island Rum

Banks Five Island rum - CopyBanks Five Island rum was introduced in 2010.  It is named after the British explorer Sir Joseph Banks.  It is a unique blend of 21 rums, some pot distilled and some column distilled, from 6 distilleries from five islands.  Those islands include Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, and Java.  Each rum is aged between 3-12 years and the rums are blended together in Holland and then charcoal filtered to remove the color before bottling at 86 proof. Review: Brugal Especial Extra Dry Rum

Brugal Extra Dry RUm - CopyBrugal Especial Extra Dry rum is made with 100% Dominican Republic grown sugar cane molasses.  It is distilled twice using their proprietary methods to remove some of the sweetness from the alcohol.  They age the rum in American white oak barrels for 2-5 years.  The barrels are blended and then triple charcoal filtered to remove impurities and color.  Pure spring water from Puerto Plata is added to reduce to 80 proof before bottling. Review: The Real McCoy 3 Year Old Rum

The Real McCoy 3 year old rum - CopyThe Real McCoy 3 year old rum was introduced November 2013.  They also make a 5 and 12 year old rum.  It is named after Bill McCoy the pioneer rum runner of the prohibition era.  He operated a legal floating liquor store 3 miles off the coast of New York selling rum sourced from Barbados.  It is crafted at the Four Square Distillery in Barbados, at the same distillery that supplied rum to Bill McCoy.  It is made with black strap molasses, a proprietary strain of yeast, and pure spring water.  It is small batch, single distilled in a combination of column and pot stills.  The rum is aged 3 years in American oak bourbon barrels, and then charcoal filtered to remove the color.  No sugar or flavors are added. Review: Shellback Silver Rum

Shellback Silver rum - CopyShellback Silver Rum was introduced in 2012.  It is part of E&J Gallo’s growing line of spirits that includes New Amsterdam Vodka, and Gin, and Camarena Tequila.  The Shellback name comes from a term used to call sailors who had crossed the equator.  It is made in Barbados at the West Indies Rum Distillery.  If the name sounds familiar it is where Malibu and Cockspur Rum is created.  The West Indies Rum Distillery has a history dating back to 1893 when the Stades Brothers built the distillery to create rum to ship back to their native Germany.  Shellback Silver is made with Caribbean sugarcane that is pressed into molasses.  Yeast is added to the molasses and after fermentation it is distilled and then aged for 12 months in American white oak barrels formerly used to age American Whiskey.  The rum is then charcoal filtered to a clear color before bottling at 80 proof. Review: Appleton White Rum

Appleton White Rum - CopyAppleton White rum is made with molasses from sugar cane grown on the Appleton Estate in Jamaica, a unique stain of yeast, and soft spring water filtered by the limestone hills of the Cockpit Country.  Rum has been made at this site since 1749.  After fermentation the rum is small batch distilled in a copper pot still and a column still.  It is blended and aged two years in oak barrels previously used to age Jack Daniels Whiskey, and then filtered through special charcoal filters. Review: Don Q Cristal Rum

Don Q Cristal - CopyDon Q Cristal rum was introduced in 1978.  While Bacardi is the worlds best selling rum, DonQ is the best selling rum in Puerto Rico, where both are produced.  Don Q began distilling rum in 1865, but after a decades long absence in the US, they re-launched the brand for US distribution in 2006.  It is made with the finest molasses, fresh volcanic mountain water from the Rio Inabon, and a unique strain of yeast kept active and in use for over 75 years.  After fermentation the rum is distilled five times before being aged 1 1/2 to 5 years in American White Oak Barrels.  After blending, it is charcoal filtered before bottling on site at 80 proof.
