Review: Banks Five Island Rum

by Jeff Ellingson

Banks Five Island rum - CopyBanks Five Island rum was introduced in 2010.  It is named after the British explorer Sir Joseph Banks.  It is a unique blend of 21 rums, some pot distilled and some column distilled, from 6 distilleries from five islands.  Those islands include Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, and Java.  Each rum is aged between 3-12 years and the rums are blended together in Holland and then charcoal filtered to remove the color before bottling at 86 proof. The aroma is smoky with molasses, grass, and banana.  The smoky molasses entry is followed by lime flavor and fades with a smoky oak taste and a peppery sting with a little heat, but far less then I would expect from an 86 proof rum.  The finish is dry with a little smoke and lime.  This is a rum that is smooth enough to drink on the rocks, and because of the smoky taste, I would prefer other white rums when I’m mixing a cocktail.  But, if you are looking for a smoky tasting rum to sip, this is a very smooth one.
