ula Toasted Coconut Rum is crafted at Hawaii Sea Spirits. The distillery operates on an 80 acre organic farm in Kula, (upcountry) Maui Hawaii. They also produce Kula Dark Rum, Kula Organic Rum, and Ocean Organic Vodka. The rum brand was formerly sold as Deep Island Rum. Only the name has changed. Kula Toasted Coconut Rum was initially only available in Hawaii. Now that it is available on the mainland I was lucky enough to score a bottle. Kula Toasted Coconut is formulated with Kula Organic Rum, which is distilled from organic sugar cane and is gluten free. The sugar cane is grown on the 80 acres surrounding the distillery. Deep ocean mineral water sourced from 3000 feet below sea level is blended to reduce to proof. The rum is flavored with natural caramelized coconut sugars. Natural caramel is added for consistent color. It pours to a golden caramel color. The aroma is fresh toasted coconut flake, vanilla, and burnt sugar. Additional time in the glass brings out caramel. The sweet macaroon cookie entry is joined by vanilla building to a coconut caramel cream pie. It fades with runny caramel, and finishes with banana, lime zest, toasted coconut, and brown sugar.
