Review: Hard Truth Toasted Coconut Rum

Hard Truth Toasted Coconut Rum was released July 5 2019.  It is one of eleven spirits currently crafted at the Hard Truth Distillery located on 325 wooded acres in Brown County Indiana.  What started in 2015 as a small operation in the upper rooms of a pizza restaurant has grown to a 18,000 square foot state of the art distillery with Vendome Copper & Brass Works equipment.  The success of Hard Truth Toasted Coconut Rum led to the release of Hard Truth Toasted Coconut Rum Cream in September 2020.  Hard Truth Toasted Coconut starts with their white rum distilled from molasses and pure cane sugar as a base.  They distill the rum at a low proof to maintain the rich deep notes of molasses.  Hand toasted flaked coconut, cane sugar, and natural sea salt are blended before bottling at 42 proof. Review: Kula Toasted Coconut Rum

Kula Toasted Coconut Rum is crafted at Hawaii Sea Spirits.  The distillery operates on an 80 acre organic farm in Kula, (upcountry) Maui Hawaii.  They also produce Kula Dark Rum, Kula Organic Rum, and Ocean Organic Vodka.  The rum brand was formerly sold as Deep Island Rum.  Only the name has changed.  Kula Toasted Coconut Rum was initially only available in Hawaii.  Now that it is available on the mainland I was lucky enough to score a bottle.  Kula Toasted Coconut is formulated with Kula Organic Rum, which is distilled from organic sugar cane and is gluten free.  The sugar cane is grown on the 80 acres surrounding the distillery.  Deep ocean mineral water sourced from 3000 feet below sea level is blended to reduce to proof.  The rum is flavored with natural caramelized coconut sugars.  Natural caramel is added for consistent color.
