Review: El Mexicano Tequila Blanco

by Jeff Ellingson

El Mexicano Tequila Blanco is distilled by Master Distiller Don Leon.  The Leon family had produced tequila for three generations, and Don Leon wanted to get back into it with a goal of creating a top quality tequila.  He spent 15 years planning before building his own distillery, Tequilas EL Mexicano, in the Highlands of Jalisco.  El Mexicano is made from 100% Blue Weber agave grown for 6-8 years on the family farm.  The trimmed agave is cooked in an autoclave oven.  The extracted juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks and double distilled in stainless steel and bottled additive free.  The aroma leads with earthy mushroom, sea salt, cooked agave, grapefruit, black licorice, and baking spice.  Additional time brings out black pepper on the back end.  The sweet citrus, mineral, and cooked agave entry is joined by cinnamon building to a baking spice, citrus, and cooked agave peak.  It fades with cooked agave, cinnamon, and orange, and finishes with black pepper, sea salt, cinnamon, mineral, cooked agave, and orange peel.  El Mexicano Tequila Blanco is a full flavored tequila with citrus and more cinnamon and spice flavor than any unflavored blanco tequila I’ve had.
