Review: Casa Azul Tequila Soda

by Jeff Ellingson

Have you seen the video of Taylor Swift drinking a Casa Azul Tequila Soda in a private box at a recent Kansas City Chiefs Football game?  Like everything she touches Casa Azul Tequila Soda sales have enjoyed a spike in sales since the world witnessed this.  Casa Azul Tequila Soda was launched in California, Colorado, Texas, Georgia, and Florida August 2022 by Lance Collins.  Since then distribution has expanded.  Lance had previously founded BodyArmor, Core Water, and Fuze Tea.  In February 2023 NFL All Pro Tight End Travis Kelsey announced he had taken an equity stake in the brand.  Casa Azul Tequila Soda is available in a 4 flavor 8 can variety pack.  In May 2023 they released Casa Azul Organic Tequila, and Casa Azul Grapefruit Tequila Soda.  August 2023 PGA Golfer Brooks Koepka also took an equity position in the brand.  Casa Azul Tequila Soda is made with carbonated water, Casa Azul tequila, citric acid, stevia, organic cane sugar, organic agave syrup/nectar, and natural flavors.  Each 12 ounce slim can weighs in at 5% alcohol, with 100 calories and 0 carbs, Casa Azul Lime Margarita has 1 carb.

Casa Azul Tequila Soda Lime Margarita: It pours with very little carbonation.  The aroma leads with lime and cooked agave.  The sweet lime and stevia entry is joined by agave building to a candied lime and agave peak.  It fades with Lime JELL-O, whipped cream, and agave nectar leaving stevia dusted lime and a hint of tequila taste.

Grade: B

Casa Azul Tequila Soda Strawberry Margarita:  The aroma leads with strawberry puree, lime, and agave syrup.  The sweet strawberry and tart lime entry is joined by earthy agave building to a juicy strawberry, tart lime, and agave peak.  It fades with about the same flavor profile, and finishes with strawberry sour patch kids, Lime Dots, a squeeze of lime, pinch of stevia, and roasted agave taste.

Grade: B-

Casa Azul Tequila Soda Peach Mango:  The aroma leads with mango.  Additional time brings out fresh peach.  The sliced ripe peach and stevia entry is joined by mango, whipped cream, and agave at the midpoint.  It fades with juice peach and finishes with mango and creamy agave nectar.

Grade: A-

Casa Azul Tequila Soda Watermelon:  The aroma leads with Jolly Rancher watermelon.  The candied watermelon entry builds to a sweet and tangy watermelon and agave syrup peak.  It fades with watermelon, whipped cream, and a hint of chocolate.  The finish leaves watermelon, stevia, and subtle blanco tequila taste.

Grade: B+

The Bottom Line:  Casa Azul will probably appeal more to someone looking for a hard seltzer than someone looking for a soda with real tequila taste.  Each of the stevia sweetened Casa Azul Tequila Soda flavors are on the sweet side.  There is also more agave syrup/nectar than tequila taste which begs the question is Casa Azul Tequila Soda made with 100% agave tequila?  The tequila may be a mixto or it may be blended with organic cane sugar alcohol.  Casa Azul Tequila is on the ingredient list along with NOM 1489.  Casa Azul Organic Tequila is distilled at NOM 1480.
