Review: Big Country Organic Hard Seltzer

by Jeff Ellingson

Big Country Organic Hard Seltzer was introduced in 2020 with four flavors including Strawberry & Tangerine, Honeydew & Yuzu, Coconut & Papaya, and Blackberry & Grapefruit.  They recently relaunched the brand with three new flavors including Passion Fruit & Kiwi, Prickly Pear & Peach, and Watermelon & Pineapple.  They kept Blackberry & Grapefruit.  Big Country Foods started as an organic cane sugar supplier by Bill Gillies in 2013.  In 2020 Bill opened Willards Brewery, the only certified organic brewery in the state of Texas.  Ricky Cobia a nationally acclaimed mixologist helped in crafting the organic flavors found in Big Country Organic Hard Seltzer.  Each 12 ounce can is made with purified water, organic alcohol fermented with Big Country organic cane sugar, organic flavors, and citric acid.

Big Country Pear & Peach:  The aroma leads with tropical pineapple, grapefruit, and peach.  The sweet prickly pear entry has notes of strawberry and watermelon.  Peach arrives building to a grapefruit strawberry and peach peak.  It fades with tart peach, and finishes with tangy prickly pear, white grapefruit and peach skin taste.

Grade: A-

Big Country Blackberry & Grapefruit:  The aroma leads with fresh smashed blackberry and sliced grapefruit.  The sweet blackberry entry is joined by juicy grapefruit building to a tart well balanced blackberry grapefruit peak.  It fades with ripe blackberry and finishes with juicy unsweetened ruby red grapefruit taste.

Grade: A

Big Country Passion Fruit & Kiwi:  The aroma leads with kiwi and strawberry.  Additional time brings out passion fruit.  The sweet kiwi entry has notes of strawberry and tropical pineapple building to a tropical passion fruit and banana peak.  It fades with tangy citrus and kiwi and finishes with tart orange , grapefruit and long lasting strawberry banana taste.

Grade: A-

Big Country Watermelon & Pineapple:  The aroma leads with sliced pineapple and sweetened watermelon.  The sweet watermelon and pineapple entry builds to a juicy pineapple and tangy citrus peak.  It fades and finishes with long lasting watermelon pineapple and whole grapefruit taste.

Grade: A-

The Bottom Line:  Sad to say it took organic spirits to get me on the organic band wagon but now that I’m on, I’m a big believer in the flavor burst organic products produce.  At a time when several hard seltzer brands have pumped up their flavor volume with oversweet fruit juice concentrates, and sweeteners its refreshing to drink a hard seltzer with their flavor burst coming directly from organic flavors.
