Review: Midnight Moon Apple Pie Moonshine

midnight moon apple pie - CopyMidnight Moon Apple Pie moonshine is one of six moonshine flavors Piedmont Distillers launched the Midnight Moon line of moonshine with in 2012.  The other flavors include cherry, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, and cranberry.  Their moonshine is based on Junior Johnson’s old family moonshine recipe.  Junior Johnson was a legendary moonshiner with a police record to prove it.  Every batch of Midnight Moon starts with corn and it is triple distilled for smoothness, in small batches.  Their Apple Pie recipe adds apple juice and a cinnamon stick before bottling at 70 proof in Madison North Carolina.  No artificial colors, flavors, or extracts are used. Review: Firefly Apple Pie Moonshine

firefly apple pie - CopyFirefly Apple Pie Moonshine is one of six flavors they launched their line of moonshine with in March 2013.  They have since added blackberry, a flavor they originally only sold on site.  It is made on Wadmalaw Island, 30 miles south of Charleston South Carolina.  This distillery opened in 2006 and it was made famous in 2008 when they introduced the first and in my opinion best tasting hand made sweet tea flavored vodka.  Firefly moonshine is made with corn, barley, wheat, sugar, and natural flavors in two 300 gallon home made pot stills.  To handle demand outside of South Carolina Firefly moonshine is produced and bottled by Sazerac in Frankfort Kentucky. Review: Ole Smoky Lemon Drop Tennessee Moonshine

Ole smoky lemon drop moonshineOle Smoky Lemon Drop Tennessee Moonshine was introduced October 2013 with their Strawberry Moonshine.  It is one of 13 flavors they create in Gatlinburg Tennessee with neutral spirits as the base.  Natural lemon juice, sugar, and some artificial sweetener is added.  They use a still and a 100 year old family recipe that has been perfected with the help of Dave Pickerell a former master distiller for Makers Mark Bourbon.  Ole Smoky bottles their moonshine at 100, 80, and 40 proof.  While the Lemon Drop was initially produced at 40 proof, Ole Smoky announced in July they would start bottling it at 80 proof as part of their new Lightnin line of moonshine.  While the 40 proof line was designed to attract a larger fan base, current moonshine customers may prefer the heavier alcohol content.  The Lemon Drop reviewed is the original 4o proof, currently still available at most liquor stores.  Read more »
