Review: Firefly Caramel Moonshine
Firefly Caramel Moonshine is one of six flavors they launched their line of moonshine with in March 2013. They have since added Blackberry, a flavor they originally only sold on site. It is made at the Firefly Distillery on Wadmalaw Island 30 miles south of Charleston South Carolina. This distillery opened in 2006 and it was made famous in 2008 when they introduced the first hand made sweet tea flavored vodka. This vodka has become so popular they moved production to the Buffalo Trace Bourbon distillery in Frankfort Kentucky. Their Caramel moonshine is made with corn, barley, wheat, sugar, natural flavors and certified color and it is bottled at 60 proof. To handle increase demand outside of South Carolina, Sazerac produces and bottles Firefly moonshine in Frankfort Kentucky.It pours to a caramel color. The aroma is caramel with notes of caramel corn. The flavor enters as a salty caramel that I find a little heavy on the salt. At the midpoint I pick up a some whiskey flavor with a mild mouth warming and a burn on the back of my throat with more heat on the finish. While I enjoy salt on pretzels, chips, and popcorn, I’ve always felt salt on caramel and watermelon takes more away from the original flavor than it adds. Based on the number of salted caramel products on the market today, including several salted caramel vodka’s, I may be in the minority. Served on the rocks, softens the saltiness of the flavor and the heat on the finish, but some including myself will enjoy this moonshine best when it is mixed in a cocktail.
