Review: Kula Toasted Coconut Rum

Kula Toasted Coconut Rum is crafted at Hawaii Sea Spirits.  The distillery operates on an 80 acre organic farm in Kula, (upcountry) Maui Hawaii.  They also produce Kula Dark Rum, Kula Organic Rum, and Ocean Organic Vodka.  The rum brand was formerly sold as Deep Island Rum.  Only the name has changed.  Kula Toasted Coconut Rum was initially only available in Hawaii.  Now that it is available on the mainland I was lucky enough to score a bottle.  Kula Toasted Coconut is formulated with Kula Organic Rum, which is distilled from organic sugar cane and is gluten free.  The sugar cane is grown on the 80 acres surrounding the distillery.  Deep ocean mineral water sourced from 3000 feet below sea level is blended to reduce to proof.  The rum is flavored with natural caramelized coconut sugars.  Natural caramel is added for consistent color. Review: Coconut Cartel Special

Coconut Cartel Special was inspired by a Miami favorite.  Fresh cold coconuts spiked with premium Guatemalan dark rum.  It is made from premium Guatemalan anejo rum.  Guatemalan rum is made from fermented virgin sugar cane syrup.  The rum is distilled in copper column stills and is solera-style aged in new charred American white oak barrels for between four and twelve years.  The rum is proofed down to 40% alcohol with fresh coconut water before bottling.  The Coconut Cartel brand was created by Mike and Dani Zig who were born in Miami to Latin parents.  They grew up living between Miami, Guatemala, and El Salvador.  Their first venture included smuggling coconuts in their suitcases from islands off the coast of El Salvador and selling them directly to Miami Beach’s best hotels.  These coconuts were stamped with the Coconut Cartel or specific resort logo, and served with added alcohol.  These coconut cocktails were quit popular.  Coconut Cartel Special is an extension of this brand. Review: Bom Bom Coco Mochanut

Bom Bom Coco Mochanut was launched by husband and wife team Kevin Mowers and Eva Maria Janerus in 2016.  Coco Mochanut was inspired by Kevin’s attempt to deconstruct a Mounds candy bar, Eva Maria’s favorite sweet treat, while trying to craft a cocktail with the same flavor DNA.  Kevin is a food scientist.  Bom Bom translates to “my sweetheart” in Spain.  Coco Mochanut is an all natural, gluten free, and kosher blend of chocolate, coffee, cream, coconut, and Caribbean rum.  It is produced and bottled at 36 proof, by LiDestri Spirits, a private label bottler in Rochester New York.  By comparison Baileys weighs in at 34 proof. Review: Pinkertons Coconut Rum

Pinkertons Coconut Rum was released March 2017.  It joins Pinkertons Platinum Rum and was followed by Pinkertons Gold Rum.  Each rum starts with a base made from Texas grown cane sugar molasses from the Rio Grande Valley, water, and yeast.  The molasses and yeast ferment for a week.  Distillation follows in a still designed and built by Founder and Master Distiller Lucas Pinkerton.  Once reduced to proof, coconut essence and natural flavors are infused.  The spirit is redistilled before bottling at 60 proof. Review: Big Five Coconut Rum

Big Five Coconut Rum is one of three rums crafted at St Petersburg Distillery under the Big Five Label.  The other two are Big 5 Silver, and Big 5 Gold Rum.  Big Five Rum is named for the five grand social clubs that thrived in Havana in the 1950’s.  For the record those clubs included The Vedado Tennis Club, Miramar Yacht Club, Biltmore Yacht and Country Club, Havana Yacht Club, and Casino Espanol.  Big 5 rum is made from sugar cane molasses sourced from South Florida sugar growers.  The rum is column distilled four times and pot distilled once.  The spirit is then artisan water proofed over four stages, charcoal filtered twice, and rested for 48 hours at each stage.  The resting period gives the water and spirit time to marry.  Natural coconut flavors are infused before bottling at 70 proof. Review: Gubba Silver Rum

Gubba Silver Rum was introduced in 2013 along with Gubba Gold Rum.  After visiting St Martin with his wife and tasting delicious Island crafted rum liqueur, I’m guessing Toppers Rhum, Gubba Rum owner Steven Gubb was inspired to create a new different tasting rum.  Gubba Rums are crafted using a technique that dates back to the 1800’s.  These artisanal organic and naturally infused rums are made from pure organic cane and the finest fruits, spices, and herbs.  Gubba Silver Rum is distilled at Dancing Pines Distillery in Loveland Colorado.  It is unfiltered and infused with organic coconut. Review: Blackmask Island Coconut Spiced Pacific Rum

Blackmask Island Coconut Spiced Pacific Rum is one of 4 rum varieties produced by United Winery and Distillery in Nakhon Pathom Thailand.  The other varieties include Original Spiced, Black Premo, and Tropical Chai.  Each starts with a cask aged pacific rum base.  Island spices and coconut are infused with that rum base in creating Blackmask Island Coconut.  Coconut rum may be synonyms with the Caribbean, but the coconut is native to Asia, so it’s only natural a distillery in Thailand would make a coconut rum of their own.   Read more »
