Review: Truly Wonderworld Hard Seltzer

by Jeff Ellingson

Truly Wonderworld was just released.  It has been 4 months since Truly has released a new mix pack.  In hard seltzer years that’s equal to about one year.  A quick glance at the Truly web page shows this is one of nine Truly brand, 4 flavor Mix Packs.  The others include Truly Berry, Citrus, Tropical, Lemonade, Iced Tea, Punch, Margarita, and Vodka Seltzer.  Each of the four new flavors are a two fruit blend made with filtered water, alcohol from cane sugar, less than 2% real fruit juice from concentrate, and natural flavors.  Truly and White Claw continue to dominate the hard seltzer market but sales have slowed and they have both introduced flavored vodka’s.  Truly also released Truly Vodka Seltzer.  Truly Wonderworld shows Truly has not forgotten that hard seltzer helped carry Boston Beer Company for several years as sales of some of their other brands including Sam Adams slowed.

Truly Peach Drop:  Made with peach juice from concentrate and mango juice from concentrate.  The aroma leads with sliced mango.  Additional time brings out sweet peach and subtle carbon seltzer.  The sweet mango entry is joined by peach building to a juicy fresh peach peak.  It fades with tart peach and finishes with tangy mango and sour peach.

Grade: A-

Truly Strawberry Breeze:  Made with strawberry juice from concentrate and watermelon juice from concentrate.  The aroma leads with a floral blend of strawberry and watermelon.  The sweet and tart strawberry entry builds to a juicy watermelon and ripe strawberry peak.  Watermelon is a hard flavor to duplicate without taking on a Jolly Rancher vibe.  The ripe strawberry balances the watermelon here bringing out natural fruit taste finishing with sour watermelon and tangy strawberry taste.

Grade: A

Truly Citrus Clouds:  Made with lime juice from concentrate and lemon juice from concentrate.  The aroma leads with fresh sliced lime.  Sliced lemon follows.  The citrus blend is led by lime with fresh squeezed lemonade joining at the midpoint.  It fades with tart lemon-lime and finishes with lemon juice and lime peel and carbon seltzer taste.  This has real natural lemon and lime taste and a little more carbon seltzer on the finish than the other Truly seltzers.

Grade: B+

Truly Wonder What?  Made with orange juice from concentrate and pineapple juice from concentrate.  If this was meant to be a secret blend the ingredient list gives it away.  My first thought of a Pineapple and orange juice cocktail is The Painkiller which also includes rum, coconut, and nutmeg.  Pineapple & Orange is a popular blend of fruit juice as both Simply and Dole sell bottles of the blend.  The aroma of Truly Wonder What leads with fresh squeezed orange juice.  Additional time brings out Hawaiian pineapple wedge notes.  The sweet pineapple entry is joined by orange building to a juicy orange pineapple juice peak.  It fades with tangy pineapple and finishes with sour pineapple, tangerine, and orange sherbet with mild carbon seltzer taste.
