Review: Truly Strawberry Lemonade Vodka

by Jeff Ellingson

Since it’s launch in 2016 Truly Hard Seltzer has enjoyed a meteoric rise in sales.  Much of this increase in sales is the result of product innovation.  After coming up with dozens of flavor variations of hard seltzer, Boston Beer Works collaborated with Beam Suntory in creating Truly Vodka in three flavors including Pineapple Mango and Wild Berry.  Truly Strawberry Lemonade is made with a vodka base made from 100% corn.  The vodka is triple distilled.  5% juice, natural flavors and certified colors are added before bottling at 60 proof.

It pours to a pink lemonade color.  The aroma leads with frozen strawberries and lemonade.  The sweet syrupy strawberry puree entry is joined by Lemonhead candy building to a Tangy Strawberry SweeTarts Ropes and lemon juice peak.  It fades with Strawberry Twizzlers and sugary lemonade leaving tart lemon, corn distilled vodka, saline, and juicy strawberry taste.  Truly Strawberry Lemonade is so sweet it should come with a warning label against drinking this vodka straight.  Mixed 3 parts of club soda to 1 part Truly softens much of the sweetness and drops the alcohol to 15 proof.  Mixed 4 to 1 brings this down to a 6% cocktail, more in line with a hard seltzer.  Even with an 80% soda blend I find the overall taste a little on the sweet side.
