Review: The Kraken Black Spiced Rum

Kraken Black Spiced Rum - CopyThe Kraken Black Spiced Rum was introduced in 2009.  It is made in Trinidad and Tobago at Trinidad Distillers Ltd., the same distillery that produces the Angostura line of rums.  The rum is named for the fictional giant squid/octopus, sea beast pictured on the bottles label.  It is made with Caribbean molasses and a secret blend of 13 spices.It pours to a red copper color.  I was expecting black.  The aroma is cinnamon, vanilla, and molasses.  The vanilla and molasses entry is joined by cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and chocolate flavor.  The fade is warm and spicy with a rum kick, finishing with clove and bitter coffee taste.  At 94 proof there may be a little too much octane in The Kraken Black Spiced Rum to serve on the rocks, but there is certainly enough flavor to make a tasty cocktail.
