Review: Superbird Blanco Tequila

by Jeff Ellingson

Superbird Blanco Tequila was just released.  It is one of three Superbird expressions.  The other two are Superbird Reposado, aged 6 months in wooden bourbon and wine casks, and Superbird Fuego made from the Superbird Blanco base colored with red grape skins, then infused with jalapeno syrup.  CEO Richard Betts created Superbird, “To have all the good stuff and none of the bullshit”.  Superbird is part of Casa Komos Brands Group.  CKBG is best known for their Super Premium Komos tequila.  They also produce a line of canned tequila soda’s under the Superbird name with four flavors, Pink Grapefruit, Pineapple, Lime, and Black Cherry.  Molson Coors owns a minority stake in CKBG.  The unique graphics on the Superbird Tequila bottle and Superbird Tequila Soda cans were designed by Ukrainian tattoo artist Oleg Romaniuk.  Superbird is made from 100% agave grown in the Lowland Region at Grupo Solave.  818, and Astral tequila are also produced there.  The aroma leads with vanilla, mint, clove, herbal, and cooked agave.  Additional time brings out baked cinnamon apple, and black pepper.  The sweet cooked agave entry is joined by citrus, clove, and apple building to a tropical fruit and cooked agave peak.  It fades with vanilla and citrus and finishes with green banana and black pepper.
