Review: Shipyard Melonhead Ale

by Jeff Ellingson

shipyard-melonheadShipyard Melonhead Ale was introduced March 2013.  It is a seasonal beer produced March-July each year.  All right I agree I’m a little late on this review but watermelon flavored beers have been growing in popularity so I wanted to review a couple before October.  Melonhead is one of 21 varieties of beer they brew each year at the Shipyard Brewery.  They also brew a Pumpkinhead and Applehead Beer.  Shipyard has been brewing beer in Portland Maine since 1994.  Melonhead is brewed as an ale with natural flavors added after brewing. It pours to a bright golden color with a medium white head.  The aroma is Jolly Rancher candy with a malty backing.  The watermelon entry is natural tasting.  A light wheat beer flavor follows.  As the beer flavor fades the watermelon flavor intensifies building to a watermelon peak I would describe as part watermelon and part Jolly Rancher.  The finish is creamy and nicely malted.  This is a very refreshing beer that will go down easy on a hot summer day.
