It is named for Sailor Norman aka Jerry Collins, possibly the most famous tattoo artist of all time. After joining the Navy in 1930, Jerry ended up opening a tattoo shop in Hawaii where many a sailor left his shop, and the island wearing some of his original art on their skin. The Hawaiian Hula Girl picture on the bottles label is an actual picture of a tattoo he created. Sailor Jerry Spiced rum is made with Virgin Island rum, spice, caramel, and other natural flavors. It pours to a golden red amber color. The aroma is vanilla, cinnamon, root beer, cherry, and high octane alcohol. The dry caramel, cherry, and oak entry is joined by vanilla and cinnamon flavor. Cherry flavor dominates, at the midpoint. It fades with allspice flavor, a warm peppery sting, and cherry oak taste. The finish feels every bit of 92 proof, with heat, sting, and burn, that leaves a cinnamon cherry oak taste. Sailor Jerry certainly has enough good flavor to make a tasty cocktail, but at 92 proof the taste is a little strong to serve on the rocks.
