Review: Naked Turtle White Rum

naked-turtle-withe-rum-image-copyNaked Turtle White Rum was launched by Diageo in 2012 to compete with Bacardi.  It is distilled five times with sugarcane molasses and the pristine water of the Virgin Islands, at the same St. Croix distillery where Captain Morgan is made.  The Naked Rum Company thinks that rum, like life is best enjoyed naked.  That’s why Naked Turtle Rum never touches the inside of an oak barrel.  Naked Turtle has a partnership with the Sea Turtle Conservancy, a group that works for the long term survival of the sea turtle.The aroma is vanilla cream soda and molasses.  The vanilla cream entry has a sugary sweetness that is quite tasty, building to a vanilla extract peak.  It fades with molasses and a warm peppery sting and finishes with bittersweet taste, and a mild rum burn.  Naked Turtle Rum has a nice taste profile that will work well mixed in cocktails.  While I agree rum is best enjoyed naked, if you are looking for a sipping rum, Naked Turtle Rum may have benefitted from spending some time in a barrel.
