Monkey Spiced Rum was created and financed by Zane Lamprey the host of cable TV shows Three Sheets, Drinking Made Easy, and Chug. He also makes the previously reviewed Monkey Toasted Coconut Rum. The brand is named for his stuffed monkey, TV companion. Monkey Spiced Rum is distilled at the Angostura Distillery in Trinidad with molasses mostly sourced from Dominican Republic grown sugar cane, and a proprietary yeast strain. The rum is distilled in a continuous distillation column still. Pure filtered water is blended to reduce to proof, before aged for 2-3 years in American oak barrels previously used to mature Jack Daniels. Natural flavors and spice including cassia from Burma, Tahitian Vanilla Bean, and a hint of coconut flavor are added before bottling at 70 proof in Rochester New York. The Monkey Rum line of products is currently available in California, Florida, New York, and New Jersey. There are several on-line sources.It pours to a natural golden amber color. The aroma is coconut, molasses, and vanilla. The sweet molasses opening offers soft notes of oak building to a cinnamon vanilla bean peak. If this flavor was ice cream I would ask for 3 scoops. The long fade has creamy caramel, molasses cookie, and coconut cream taste, that is joined by a cinnamon lead spice, and finishes with a very mild sting. Unlike some distillers, Zane did not drop the spice rack in his rum barrel, but one taste of Monkey Spiced Rum convinced me, less is more. This spiced rum will be hard to beat.
