Review: Jameson Cold Brew

by Jeff Ellingson

Jameson Cold Brew Irish Whiskey was just released as a Limited Edition.  At one time there was one option for coffee flavored alcohol, and that was Kahlua.  There are now dozens of coffee, espresso, and cold brew spirits including liqueurs, vodka, tequila, and rums.  Curiously absent was coffee flavored whiskey.   This is the first Jameson flavored expression.  They had previously released their Caskmates series of beer barrel finished Jameson Whiskey.  This initially consisted of an IPA Edition, and a Stout Edition.  They followed that up with Topcutter IPA Edition, and Revolution Brewing Edition.  As the name would suggest Jameson Cold Brew infuses their Original Jameson Whiskey with Cold Brew Coffee flavor.  That flavor is made from Arabica beans grown in Brazil and Columbia.  No sugar is added.  It pours to a cold brewed coffee color.  The aroma is ground coffee beans, vanilla, and dark chocolate with a whiskey backing.  Additional time in the glass brings out oak and caramel notes.  The fresh cold brewed coffee entry is joined by vanilla, chocolate, and oak building to a sweet vanilla cream and mocha whiskey peak.  The smooth fade and finish brings orange to the existing flavor base, and leaves bittersweet coffee taste and breath.  Most coffee flavored spirits lead with a blast of coffee flavor and some are also very sweet.  Jameson Cold Brew is neither.  My initial thought was this tasted a little watered down, but over time the coffee flavor intensified.  I would describe the coffee taste as having the flavor intensity of a cold brew with the the coffee taste volume of an iced coffee.  This allows some of the sweet tasting Jameson whiskey base to shine through.  Weighing in at 60 proof, with 70 calories per 1.5 oz. serving, Jameson Cold Brew will appeal to those counting points.  My suggestion is to keep this in your refrigerator and serve chilled and neat to eliminate further dilution from the ice, or mix in a cocktail.
