Review: High Wire Hometown Vodka

by Jeff Ellingson

High Wire Hometown Vodka is crafted with 100% locally grown corn.  It is small batch distilled over 7 times on a hand hammered German built custom Carl copper still, and charcoal filtered prior to hand bottling.  High Time Distilling Co. was opened by husband and wife team Scott Blackwell and Ann Marshall September 2013 in a rustic 6000 square foot warehouse in downtown Charleston South Carolina.  It was the first legal distillery since Prohibition in Charleston.  High Wire has since expanded to a 43,000 square foot facility.  Only about half of the space is currently being used, but it does leave room for future expansion.  High Wire Distilling Co. also crafts Hat Trick Gin, Jimmy Red Straight Bourbon, Southern Revival Rye, and Southern Amaro.  The aroma leads with boiled sweet corn.  Additional time brings out vanilla, and kettle corn notes.  The sweet corn entry builds to a kettle corn peak.  It fades with citrus and finishes with saline, vanilla, mineral, a sprinkle of white pepper, anise, and roasted sweet corn taste.
