Review: Chocolat Rouge Milk Chocolate Wine

by Jeff Ellingson

Chocolat Rouge Milk Chocolate - CopyChocolat Rouge Milk Chocolate Wine is one of three flavors of chocolate wine created by E&J Gallo in Modesto California.  Introduced in 2012, it was awarded a Double Gold Medal and was given a score of 98 at the 2012 California State Fair.  It is made with Barbera wine, cream, chocolate and natural flavors and bottled at 14% alcohol. In the bottle the aroma is Tootsie Roll chocolate.  It pours to a dark chocolate color with the consistency of water where I pick up some wine scents.  While it has a creamy flavor it has the thin feel of wine.  The initial taste is cream followed by sweet milk chocolate fading to a soft grape wine conclusion.  The natural comparison would be to a wine based Irish Cream, but the taste and feel is actually closer to a chocolate wine with the additional layering of cream.
