Review: Boardroom Fresh Citrus Vodka

by Jeff Ellingson

We recently picked up a bottle of Boardroom Fresh Citrus Vodka for review.  We had heard good things about the vodka and after sampling ourselves, we liked it so much we awarded a gold medal.  Since then Boardroom Distillery has informed us they have updated their Citrus Vodka and it is now made from a 100% non GMO corn vodka base.  The previous version was made from a vodka base made from wheat.  The current Boardroom Fresh Citrus was released near the end of 2017.  They were kind enough to send us a bottle and provide some additional details on how they craft their citrus vodka.  The vodka base is distilled in a Hagyo custom built 530 gallon still.  It is then infused with real lemon, lime, and orange.  It is a combination of dried and fresh citrus zest.  The dried citrus provides greater flavor, while the fresh is more aromatic.  No artificial flavors, color, sugar, or preservatives are added before bottling at 60 proof.  The aroma is fresh peeled citrus with notes of lemon and orange upfront.  Lime peel, vanilla, and orange blossom, follow on the backend.  Additional time in the glass brings out fresh corn.  The mineral water and sweet orange entry has a soft mouth feel.  Whole lemon and lime peel follow.  The citrus flavor intensifies building to a creamy vanilla citrus peak.  It fades with Topo Chico mineral water, and unsweetened citrus sherbet flavor.  The smooth finish has spicy lime peel, tart orange peel, juicy lemon, and creamy corn vodka taste.  So how do the two compare.  The current version is much more aromatic with notes of vanilla and orange blossom I don’t pick up from the original version.  I also pick up more citrus flavor.  Finally there is a noticeable difference in the vodka base.  I found the wheat vodka base of the previous version provided a fine pastry backing while the 100% Non GMO corn vodka base of the current Boardroom Fresh Citrus provides a little more natural sweetness, and a creamier finish.
