Review: Blue Moon Blackberry Tart Ale

by Jeff Ellingson

Blue Moon Blackberry Tart Ale - CopyBlue Moon Blackberry Tart ale was introduced in 2013.  It is a limited summer release, and one of six limited release beers that join their four seasonal and two year round beers.  It is crafted with Pale, Munich, Cara 8, Chocolate, and White Wheat malts, and Chinook hops.  It is also brewed with blackberries and raspberries. It pours to a red orange amber color with a thick tan head.  The aroma is dominated by fresh malt with coffee, chocolate and berry notes.  The entry is packed with a variety of malt flavor with a subtle sweet berry backing and a thick mouth feel.  It builds to a fresh berry peak with both raspberry and blackberry taste, and fades with a hint of dark chocolate and coffee, finishing with more Chinook hop flavor than I anticipated.  If you are looking for a burst of blackberry flavor in your beer, keep looking.  Blue Moon Blackberry Tart ale is a beer first, with some natural berry taste.
