Angry Orchard Orchards Edge Knotty Pear hard cider is one of two ciders in their new Orchards Edge line of hard cider. The other flavor is, The Old Fashioned, a cider aged on cherries, orange peel and bourbon barrels. Knotty Pear is made with the juice from American grown Culinary, Gala, Fuji, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith apples, Bartlett, Doyenne de Comice, Bosc, and D’Anjou pears, cane sugar, and cardamom. The cider is aged on white oak before bottling at 6.5% alcohol.It pours to a pale golden color with a very thin head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is fresh pressed crisp and bittersweet apple, juicy pear, cardamom, and oak with a hint of cinnamon and mint. The ripe pear entry is sweet and juicy. Cardamom flavor seperates the pear from crisp apple taste that builds to tart and fades a little bittersweet. The dry oak finish leaves a long bittersweet taste that finally gives way to cinnamon spiced apple and pear pie filling aftertaste. While I prefer crisp cider to dry and bittersweet cider there is no denying Knotty Pear is a well crafted cider.
