Review: Woodys Northwoods Maple Bourbon Cream

by Jeff Ellingson

Woodys Northwoods Maple Bourbon Cream is one of three bourbon creams recently released by Apollo Beverages.  The other varieties include Original Bourbon Cream, and Honey Bourbon Cream.  Woodys Maple is crafted with real maple syrup, bourbon aged in American oak barrels, and real dairy cream.  This is my second Woodys review, and the one I was most interested in trying, but maple flavored spirits have been hit or miss, and I felt Woodys Original was the safer pick.  Because Woodys Original tasted so good, I decided to give their Maple Bourbon Cream a try.It pours to a milky caramel color.  The aroma is maple syrup, vanilla ice cream, celery, butterscotch, and sweet bourbon.  The sweet bourbon and cream entry has vanilla and nutmeg flavor.  Maple syrup arrives at the midpoint and continues through a fade that includes bourbon eggnog taste.  The finish brings out  more sweet bourbon flavor with notes of chocolate and butterscotch.  This is a well balance bourbon cream that offers plenty of bourbon and dairy cream flavor, with only gentle warmth, and a mild tingle.  While present the maple flavor does not dominate, nor is it oversweet.
