Review: Pyrat XO Reserve Rum

by Jeff Ellingson

Pyrat XO Reserve Rum is made from a blend of nine different Caribbean rums that are aged up to 15 years.  Pyrat gets its name from the Old English word for pirate.  Once blended the rum is further aged in French limousine and toasted American barrels.  The Pyrat rum brand is part of Patron Spirits and it was included in the recent $5.1 billion acquisition by Bacardi.  Pyrat XO Reserve Rum is blended and bottled in Guyana South America by Demerara Distillers, who also distill some of the rum used to produce this rum.It pours to an orange amber color.  The aroma is whole orange, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and lemon, with an oak backing.  The sweet orange, brown sugar, vanilla and cinnamon spice entry builds to a juicy tangerine and lemon peak.  It fades with caramel and citrus.  The finish has bittersweet orange peel, and spicy ginger taste, and is warm, dry, and peppery.
