Review: Gumption Woodchuck Hard Cider

by Jeff Ellingson

Gumption Cider image - CopyGumption Woodchuck Hard Cider will be introduced in March.  I was lucky enough to get my hands on some a little early.  It will be available on draft in May.  Legendary showman PT Barnum is the inspiration for this cider.  His likeness is pictured on each bottle.  He once noted, “everybody drank cider-spirits called gumption.”  It will be available year round and it is one of eight ciders in their year round Core Series of ciders.  Their other new addition to this series is Local Nectar, and that is currently only available in Vermont and Michigan.  It is crafted with the juice from common eating apples and European Bittersweet apples and it is bottled at 5.5% alcohol. It pours to a medium carbonated golden color.  The aroma is fresh pressed apple.  The fresh apple cider flavored entry leaps from my glass and builds to a tart apple peak.  If Woodchuck was looking to create a cider as bold as their packaging, they succeeded.  The flavor fades with a light bittersweet apple taste followed by a semi dry finish.  This is not only the best tasting Woodchuck crafted cider, it is one of the best tasting ciders on the market today.  When you see it in the store I recommend picking up a couple of six packs, because people will remember their first Gumption cider, and more importantly the person who shared it with them.
