Review: Calico Jack Coconut Rum

Calico Jack Coconut rum was originally introduced as Coconut Jack rum by White Rock Distilleries in Lewiston Maine , the former owners of Pinnacle Vodka.  The name was later changed to Calico Jack prior to their April 2012 acquisition by Beam Global.  Calico Jack is currently the fifth best selling flavored rum brand in the US.  White Rock had already been purchasing their rum in bulk from Beam through their Cruzan Distillery in St. Croix and flavoring and bottling in Maine. Since the acquisition Beam has moved the flavoring and bottling to their Frankfort Kentucky facility.

The aroma is whipped cream, coconut, and rum.  The flavor enters as sweet vanilla building to a coconut milkshake peak before fading with light coconut rum and banana flavor.  It finishes with a gentle rum burn on the back of my throat.  With so many coconut flavored rums to choose from, and most priced around $10-$15 there may seem to be little incentive to save a buck trying a lower priced brand, but Calico Jack Coconut rum does not taste like a bargain basement rum.  The rum is produced by the makers of Cruzan.  The flavor was developed by the original owners of Pinnacle Vodka.  While it might be a little harder to find, it is worth the effort.  CJ Coconut is a light refreshing rum that is less sweet than most, and smooth enough to drink straight.  It also mixes well with others.  Two of these cocktails are a Calicious and a Blue Lagoon.
