Review: Café Agave Spiked Cold Brew Coffee

by Jeff Ellingson

Café Agave Spiked Cold Brew Coffee was recently launched in five states including California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, and Oregon.  Additional distribution will follow.  Cold brewed coffee follows the long list of beverages including cider, iced tea, soda, and seltzer that are now also sold spiked with alcohol.  Café Agave’s flavors include Caffé Mocha, Salted Caramel, Vanilla Cinnamon, and Espresso Shot.  Company founders Mark Scialdone and Ami Lynn Bakshi founded the company in 2016 and they also produce a line of spiked cream liqueurs.  Each Café Agave Spiked Cold Brew Coffee variety is made from a premium cold brew dark roast Arabica Columbia coffee steeped for 12 hours and spiked with a unique alcohol formulation of grape wine, real dairy cream, agave syrup, sugar, and natural flavors.  Café agave is produced in Cold Springs Minnesota at Monarch Custom Beverages and sold in four packs of 6.3 oz. cans.  Each can weighs in at 25 proof, with 149 calories per 100ml serving.  By comparison RumChata is bottled at 27 proof and Baileys Irish Cream has 327 calories per 100ml serving.  One can of Café Agave contains 38mg of natural caffeine.  This is about half as much as a comparable sized cup of coffee.  I shook each well chilled can vigorously prior to opening as suggested on the back of the can.  I then poured into a Glencairn glass to better judge aroma and color.  Each variety pours to a chocolate milk color with a creamy beige head, no doubt the result of shaking the can.  So how do the flavors measure up.

Café Agave Spiked Cold Brew Caffé Mocha Coffee:  The aroma is dark roast coffee, milk chocolate, and fresh dairy cream.  The premium chocolate ice cream entry is joined by cold brewed coffee taste.  The silky smooth finish has gentile warmth, a mild tingle, and grape wine taste.

Café Agave Spiked Cold Brew Salted Caramel Coffee:  The aroma is dark roast coffee, butterscotch, black licorice, caramel, and sea salt.  The sweet creamy dark roast coffee entry is joined by vanilla and caramel flavor.  It fades with sea salt and finishes with grape wine taste leaving salted caramel aftertaste.  There is more dark roast coffee taste and less secondary flavor in Café Agave Salted Caramel than any of the Café Agave varieties.

Score: 90

Award: Silver Medal

Café Agave Spiked Cold Brew Cinnamon Vanilla Coffee:  The aroma is cinnamon toast crunch, vanilla, and coffee.  The sweet cinnamon horchata flavor burst is joined by vanilla.  It fades with coffee ice cream taste, and finishes with grape wine and double creamed coffee flavor that leaves cinnamon and dark roast coffee taste.

Café Agave Spiked Cold Brew Espresso Shot Coffee:  The aroma is coffee, grape and cream.  The sweet creamy grape entry is backed by dark roast coffee.  The grape and coffee flavor builds to a flavor peak I would describe as equal parts grape, coffee, and cream.  The silky smooth and creamy finish continues with grape, coffee, and cream taste.  Espresso Shot has more grape wine flavor than any of the Café Agave varieties.

Score: 91

Award: Gold Medal

Café Agave Spiked Cold Brew Coffee is a tasty line of adult cold brewed coffee beverages.  I enjoyed all four varieties.  I found the dark roast Arabica coffee flavor to be natural.  The grape wine provided a sweet balance without dominating or detracting from the headline flavors.  Some grape wine based products finish with a burn, Café Agave does not.
