Review: Ballast Point Fugu Pina Vodka

fugu pina - CopyBallast Point Fugu Pina vodka is one of five vodka flavors they create in San Diego.  If the Ballast Point name sounds familiar you may have enjoyed some of the beer they brew, and started the company with.  Ballast Point was inspired by the flavors from the neighborhood taco shops.  Those flavors include spicy habanero peppers, creamy horchata. aquas fracas with sweet Jamaica Hibiscus, and juice pineapple.   They start with a six times distilled corn vodka base.  It is then filtered 15 times before passing through a proprietary diamond blending vortex, blending the vodka with water purified through reverse osmosis.  Natural pineapple flavor is then infused before bottling at 80 proof.It pours to a slightly cloudy yellow tinted color.  The aroma is a mix of pineapple and malted barley with a hint of fermented pineapple funkiness.  The malted flavored entry is joined by sweet pineapple before fading with a medium mouth warming and more malt flavor.  The finish is smooth but a little hot and spicy.  It makes me wonder how hot and spicy their Habanero flavored vodka is.  While the pineapple flavor is sweet and natural the dominant flavor here is the malted barley, making this a vodka designed by a beer lover, that may appeal most to a beer lover.
