Review: Bacardi O Rum
Bacardi O rum was introduced in 2002. It is one of 15 flavored rums they create in Puerto Rico. It is made with molasses and a single strain of yeast, Le Levadura Bacardi that are fermented for 30 hours in closed fermentation tanks. The fermented molasses is divided with some column still and some beer still distilled. Each is aged separately in lightly charred American white oak barrels. Once mature the rums are blended and filtered through a mix of charcoal made from tropical woods and coconut shells. It is infused with the essence of Mandarin oranges from Sicily, Valencia oranges from Florida, and Dancy tangerines from Brazil, Israel, and Florida.The aroma is fresh squeezed oranges and tangerines with rum under tones. The flavor enters with a candy sweet orange flavor that rivals Krispy Kreme original donuts in sugar intensity. The flavor builds to a sugar enhanced orange and tangerine peak. There is a mild mouth warming before fading with powdery ground orange sweet tart flavor and a long orange zest finish with some rum flavor and a hint of honey. While there is natural orange and tangerine flavor, Bacardi O is too sweet to drink on the rocks. Flavored rum is primarily served in cocktails. Because of that I sometimes feel it is unfair to compare Bacardi flavored rums which are bottled at 70 proof to other flavored rums bottled as light as 42 proof. To offset that higher proof, Bacardi flavored rums are over sweetened to soften the rum. Served in a cocktail then softens the sweetness. My reviews are based on spirits served neat at 36 degrees. Served in a cocktail that balances the sweetness, Bacardi O would have scored a little higher.
