Review: Thirteenth Colony Southern Vodka
Thirteenth Colony Southern Vodka is crafted at 13th Colony Distillery in Americus Georgia. 13th Colony is Geogia’s oldest operating distillery. In 2007 a group of friends including Alton Darby, Kent Cost, Dr Gil Klemann, and Winford Hines started talking about making moonshine to give as Christmas presents. In 2009 they opened their distillery built in an old mattress factory. The distillery is named for Georgia being the thirteenth American colony. 13th Colony is made from locally grown corn and water from Georgia’s oldest aquifer. It is small batch distilled six times in a 250 gallon custom built column still and then filtered 11 times. The aroma leads with ethanol and lemon. Additional time brings out kettle corn notes. The sweet lemon entry builds to a milky vanilla and lemon juice peak. It fades with boiled corn, vanilla custard, and mineral water, and finishes with saline, white pepper, vanilla, and whole lemon.
