The Pogues Irish Whiskey was launched July 2015, and is named for the Celtic Punk band formed in Ireland in 1982 by front man Shane MacGowan. The Pogues Irish Whiskey was developed and blended by Barry Walsh and Frank McHardy at West Cork Distillers. Most of the mashing, fermenting, and distilling equipment at this distillery was handcrafted onsite. The Pogues is a blend of 50% 10 year old single pot malt Irish Whiskey finished in sherry casks, and 50% 5-7 year old grain whiskey aged in bourbon barrels.It pours to a honey golden color. The aroma is vanilla, apple, spice, apricot, oak, pear, raisin, and malted barley. Wildflower honey and black pepper arrive at the back end. As the whiskey warms in my glass I pick up more oak and a little lemon peel. The sweet apple, honey entry has a creamy single malt Irish whiskey feel. Baking spice, arrives building to a vanilla and malty barley peak. It fades with oak, apple peel, and clove. The finish is semi-dry, warm and peppery, with oak, a touch of lemon, and a hint of pineapple taste.
