Review: Tequila Ocho Plata 2024 Tierras Negras

by Jeff Ellingson

Tequila Ocho Plata 2024 Tierras Negras continues our journey of reviewing 6 Tequila Ochos in six days.  It is made with agave grown in the community of “La Parada” in the San Ignacio Gordo municipality.  This historic site was a 17th century horse changing station for travelers moving between haciendas and was exclusively used for cattle pastures.  This is the first time agave was planted and harvested in this field.  The mostly flat land is full of stones, cactus, huizache, and other desert bushes.  The soil is a clayish, grey color that gives the field its Tierras Negras name. The yield was around 2200 tons with an average weight of 35-40 pounds and a sugar content above 32%.  The aroma leads with cooked agave, bell pepper, saline, and mineral.  Additional time brings out sweet potato, grapefruit, and anise.  The sweet cinnamon and cooked agave entry has a soft mineral water feel building to a cinnamon and citrus peak.  It fades with grapefruit and earthy agave and finishes with sea salt, sweet potato, orange peel, mineral, mint, and black pepper.
