Review: Planteray Sealander Rum

by Jeff Ellingson

Planteray Sealander Rum was just launched in the US.  It was previously released outside the US September 2023.  It was created by Planteray Founder & Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel at Maison Ferrand.  For the first time ever three rums from different oceans, Atlantic, Indian, and South Pacific, have been combined to create one unique rum.  These include.  West Indies Rum Distillery Pot and column still rum distilled in Barbados and aged in bourbon barrels for up to eight years.  Saint Aubin Distillery in Mauritius, made with column still cane juice rum.  Rum Co. of Fiji column distilled rum distilled and aged for 5 years in bourbon barrels in Fiji.  The rums are then shipped by sea to France for a second maturation in Maison Ferrand cognac casks before blending.  The aroma leads with cinnamon, caramel, vanilla, gingerbread, oak, almond paste, fudge, and kiwi.  The sweet vanilla, cinnamon, and honey entry builds to an orange citrus, vanilla, grape, almond, and ripe blackberry peak.  It fades with cherry, nutmeg, caramel, and amaretto and finishes with vanilla, gingerbread, baked spiced apple, and a mild pepper sting that vanishes before you can identify all of the incredible flavors in this rum.
