Review: 3 Howls Vodka

by Jeff Ellingson

3 Howls Vodka is one of 12 spirits crafted in a 5000 square foot warehouse in Seattle’s Sodo neighborhood.  Will Maschmeier founded the distillery in 2013.  His distillery tour in Isla Scotland provided the inspiration for the 3 Howls name.  While there he heard the legend of Cu-Sith, a giant hound who roams Scotland’s Highlands and Moors and howls three times before taking souls to the underworld.  3 Howls is made from a corn grain mash bill.  It is distilled 7 times in a 300 gallon copper still.  The aroma leads with boiled corn.  Additional time brings out sliced lemon wedge.  The sweet sugary lemon entry has a thick viscous feel.  Sweet corn arrives building to a bright tart lemon peak.  It fades with menthol and finishes hot and peppery with lemon cough drop taste.
