Review: Tequila Ocho Plata 2023 Potrero Grande

by Jeff Ellingson

Tequila Ocho Plata 2023 Potrero Grande is one of four Blanco tequila’s released by Tequila Ocho in 2023.  Each of the four is named for the single estate field the agave was harvested on.  Potrero Grande translates to big area dedicated to raising horses.  Rancho Potrero Grande is located 3.7 miles east of the town of Jesus Maria, close to San Agustin the original home of the Camarena family.  The field has deep red soil is mostly flat and is without rocks.  The average weight of each harvested agave is 90 pounds and the sugar content is 31.8%.  The agave is slow cooked for 48 hours in old brick ovens.  The juice from the first 8 hours of cooking is discarded because of the bitter taste.  After resting for 24 hours the juice is extracted and fermented with natural airborne yeast in open air pine wooden vats for 100 hours, then double distilled.  The aroma leads with green pepper, cooked agave, smoke, dates, and apple.  The sweet citrus, olive and earthy agave entry has a soft mineral water feel building to a raspberry lime peak.  It fades with mineral and olive, and finishes with lime peel, buttery agave, and white pepper.
