Review: Tequila Ocho Plata 2022 El Nacimiento
The Tequila Ocho story began in 2008 when fifth generation agave farmer and third generation tequilero Carlos Camarena, teamed with Tomas Estes with a single goal of providing proof of concept of terroir in tequila. They hoped to accomplish this by crafting tequila from agave grown on a different single estate using the same production methods for each batch. Each expression gets its name from the field the agave was harvested from. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo Best Tasting Spirits has sampled 2 batches of Tequila Ocho Plata from each of the last three years. We sampled these 6 over a six day period and will post one review each of the next six days. In 2022 Tequila Ocho selected agave from four different estates to craft their Tequila Plata. Tequila Ocho Plata 2022 El Nacimiento, is first up. El Nacimiento, “The Birthplace” is located in the center of the Golden Triangle of agave. It is the largest field of Master Distiller Carlos Camarena. The agave is harvested with a 30% sugar content. The aroma leads with cooked agave, lime, clove, and pepper. Additional time brings out vanilla, orange peel, rosemary, mint, and anise. The sweet earthy agave entry has a soft mineral water feel building to an herbal and pineapple peak. It fades with milky vanilla and orange citrus and finishes with mineral, herbal, lime peel, and white pepper.
