Review: Big Five Coconut Rum

Big Five Coconut Rum is one of three rums crafted at St Petersburg Distillery under the Big Five Label.  The other two are Big 5 Silver, and Big 5 Gold Rum.  Big Five Rum is named for the five grand social clubs that thrived in Havana in the 1950’s.  For the record those clubs included The Vedado Tennis Club, Miramar Yacht Club, Biltmore Yacht and Country Club, Havana Yacht Club, and Casino Espanol.  Big 5 rum is made from sugar cane molasses sourced from South Florida sugar growers.  The rum is column distilled four times and pot distilled once.  The spirit is then artisan water proofed over four stages, charcoal filtered twice, and rested for 48 hours at each stage.  The resting period gives the water and spirit time to marry.  Natural coconut flavors are infused before bottling at 70 proof. Review: Gubba Silver Rum

Gubba Silver Rum was introduced in 2013 along with Gubba Gold Rum.  After visiting St Martin with his wife and tasting delicious Island crafted rum liqueur, I’m guessing Toppers Rhum, Gubba Rum owner Steven Gubb was inspired to create a new different tasting rum.  Gubba Rums are crafted using a technique that dates back to the 1800’s.  These artisanal organic and naturally infused rums are made from pure organic cane and the finest fruits, spices, and herbs.  Gubba Silver Rum is distilled at Dancing Pines Distillery in Loveland Colorado.  It is unfiltered and infused with organic coconut. Review: Blackmask Island Coconut Spiced Pacific Rum

Blackmask Island Coconut Spiced Pacific Rum is one of 4 rum varieties produced by United Winery and Distillery in Nakhon Pathom Thailand.  The other varieties include Original Spiced, Black Premo, and Tropical Chai.  Each starts with a cask aged pacific rum base.  Island spices and coconut are infused with that rum base in creating Blackmask Island Coconut.  Coconut rum may be synonyms with the Caribbean, but the coconut is native to Asia, so it’s only natural a distillery in Thailand would make a coconut rum of their own.   Read more »

Review: Captain Morgan Loconut

Captain Morgan Loconut was just released.  It is made with a blend of real coconut liqueur, Captain Morgan rum, Caribbean spices, and natural flavors.  This is the second follow up to their original citrus, and pepper, spiced rum flavored, Captain Morgan Cannon Blast, that was launched August 2015.  Their pumpkin spiced rum flavored Jack-O-Blast was introduced September 2016.  All three of these flavors are designed primarily to be consumed as a shot, but, while Cannon Blast and Jack-O-Blast weigh in at 70 and 60 proof, Loconut hits the scale at 40 proof.   Read more »

Review: Muddy River Coconut Carolina Rum

Muddy River Coconut Carolina Rum was released June 2015.  It is one of four rums crafted at a distillery that is located 50 yards from the Catawba River.  Hence the name.  They also produce two Moonshine varieties.  The husband and wife team of Robbie and Caroline Delaney moved into 500 feet of warehouse space they found on Craigslist in 2011.  Their first product Muddy Water Silver Rum was introduced September 2012.  They soon quit their full time jobs and needed more space to keep up with demand.  Today they operate in a 6100 square feet warehouse in the same old textile mill.  Their other rums include a Spiced, and Queen Charlotte Reserve, their oak barrel aged rum.  Each rum starts with high quality molasses sourced from Louisiana and Florida sugarcane.  Two new custom hybrid reflux column stills are used.  After distilling, natural flavors are blended with the rum base, before hand bottling and labeling at 70 proof. toppers-coconut-rhum-copyToppers Coconut Rhum is one of six handcrafted rhums produced on the island of St Maarten at the Topper’s Distillery.  Their other rhums include Spiced, Mocha Mama, White Chocolate Raspberry, Banana Vanilla Cinnamon, and Caribbean White.  Each flavor is handmade with natural ingredients, and hand bottled in it’s own beautifully colored bottle on the Dutch side of the Island of St Maarten.  Each bottle features a glass embossed Topper’s on both bottles sides, and a hand painted palm tree on the flip top bottle topper.  If there is a more attractive rum bottle design it doesn’t come to mind. Review: Wicked Dolphin Coconut Rum

wicked-dolphin-coconut-rum-copyWicked Dolphin Coconut Rum was released November 2014.  It was originally only available at the Wicked Dolphin Distillery in Cape Coral Florida, but after quickly selling all 250 cases they knew they were on to something.  It is one of three rums they currently craft with 100% Florida sugar grown 35 minutes from the distillery.  While Florida may be best known for their orange groves, over half of the sugar cane produced in the US is grown in Florida.  The rum is small batch distilled  in an American built Copper Pot Still.  Real coconut water and natural ingredients are then blended before bottling at 60 proof. Review: Jumbie Coconut Splash

Jumbie Coconut SplashJumbie Coconut Splash is made with a blend of barrel aged rum distilled in Panama, and a splash of natural coconut flavor.  It is one of 4 flavor infused rums made by the Jumbie Trading Company as an homage to the spirit of the island of St Maarten.  The other flavors include Pineapple, Vanilla, Mango.  They also produce Rum Jumbie, a Caribbean Rum based liqueur infused with natural passion fruit flavor.  Originally named Rum Jumbie Coconut Splash it has been rebranded without the Rum in the brands name.  The name Jumbie comes from Caribbean lore.  It was believed in the caves of a remote Caribbean Island was a well sought after rum recipe.  It remained hidden for a long time as the natives feared entering the mysterious alcoves in the belief that Jumbies or spirits would possess anyone who found the recipe causing them to dance all night long.  Jumbie Splash is a tribute to that rediscovered recipe.
